Lycon86 04-04-2010, 07:26 PM Haven't really posted much so far, so I thought I'd show some progress on my bank busting SP-1 project...
Feel free to criticize where appropriate!

The swing'arm was just about untouched, but I wanted it polished and stiffened! Can't afford the SP-2 swingger swap! So where you see cardboard will be 3mm ally plate! I took as much off as possible to save on weight before I tacked it all together! I should have it seam welded and fully polished by Tuesday...should!

what you think?
You have a lot of work ahead of you, but excellent work on the frame! How much did the swingarm gain on the reinforcements? Is it really that weak on the SP1?
Anyway, looking forward to see the result. Good luck!
Lycon86 04-05-2010, 09:21 AM Cheers! The frame was a bit of a saga! The swing'arm is pretty beefy to begin with, but I little more strength won't hurt! And if I said I didn't do it because it looks better, that would just be a lie! Ha! But its welded back and front. I wouldn't like to guess by how much its gained! The pictures dont show it, but it was cracked from the crash. So it's definitely stiffer now!
Just need to polish it up, press some new bearings in and I'm good to go!
Paisanoracer 04-26-2010, 05:05 PM My hat's off to you. Quite the "Labors of Hercules" ahead of you. HOWEVER, you do seem up to the challenge based on what's already been accomplished. VERY BEST WISHES TO YOU...Keep us posted...
bgup619 04-27-2010, 12:12 PM I hope you didnt pay too much for that poor thing.. looking good so far!
Lycon86 04-29-2010, 02:08 PM Ha! Let's just say I won't be going on holiday for a while...
Cheers! The swing'arms polished good! I'm just having issues lacquering it! I'll have some more pictures up by the weekend I hope!
Thanks for looking chaps!
NoPower 05-02-2010, 11:15 PM Looks like your doing a really good job.:)
mighty max 05-03-2010, 09:43 AM How do u guys cleaning the engine so nice?...any chemical or polishing to make them clean?
Lycon86 05-03-2010, 04:05 PM I used some AliClean, which is a mild sulphuric acid. Then just gave it a once over with some autosol!
You can buy that ali clean from http://www.frost.co.uk/item_detail.asp?productID=8784
It's pretty usefull!
mighty max 05-04-2010, 06:33 AM tks mate...now i know how make engine looks like new....
bmfgsxr 05-04-2010, 07:45 AM nice project. i enjoy watching the progress of builds/rebuilds like this. and i agree, the swingarm looks darn good too.
fastcan 07-17-2010, 07:18 PM How do you mash a fuel tank like that?
Thats definately the best one I have seen!!!
SubSailor 07-17-2010, 08:02 PM Well you've certainly got a long term project in the works.
Good luck on the project.
Oddly enough, On the SP1 race bike, the swingarm was cut to lessen longitudinal stiffness and the upper ending mount bolt was removed due to too rigid frame.
When the throttle was opened, the swingarm and frame flexed to soften power delivery to the rear tire.
DRFLGD 07-19-2010, 01:10 PM Thats a helluva project you've got there! Looks good though!
HRC_SPW 08-19-2010, 09:08 PM This looks great.
I especially like the way you rejuvenated the frame. Great work there.
I'm also very interested to see how your swingarm turned out.
Keep up the great work.
Post up again when you get a chance.
Cheers.
Lycon86 09-14-2010, 09:50 AM **Update**
Sorry for flat lining people!
Erm...! crashed my R6! And my RS250 wasnt running right. So all 3 of my bikes were broken. But now that I've solved these issues I can focus on the SP again! hurah!
Swing'arms done(pictures to follow soon). Next is the shock linkage. Then repair the rads and oil cooler(I'm too tght to buy new!).
Untill then, here are some pics of my newly fixed R6 in action!!

madbuyer 11-14-2010, 08:28 AM Looks ecellent and keep up the good work.
One item, keep brake fluid away from that powder coating areound the brakes, they don't mix well.:D
bmfgsxr 12-01-2010, 07:19 AM we need more updates man, and im glad to see the picture of the linkage as i planned on doing mine black this winter as well. what did you use to paint it, and what did you use to fill the pits from corrosion? it looks like you powder coated the parts, but did you have to remove the bearings from the linkage?
Lycon86 12-01-2010, 07:49 PM Yeah i managed to highside my R6...AGAIN!!! And I'm practically skint to the point of poverty now! So updates will be sparse!
I filled the pitted areas with some ally filler, which
is fairly easy to get a hold of. I like it because it's less likely to rot and it's tougher then regular filler. And the paint I used was hammerite smooth black metal paint. I used acid etch as a primer, for a better key and protection.
I didn't bother taking the needle roller bearings out, because they were like new. And powder coating is too much work(and money) for something as tiny as a stone chip just to ruin everything. So I never bother!
As soon as I get my suspension back from revolution I'll have a rolling chassis to show for all my toil!
Cheers
Dave
bmfgsxr 12-02-2010, 07:40 AM thanks for the reply dave... never used ally filler before im sure i can google it, but where did you get it from and how did you apply it. its a process im unaware of. thanks
Lycon86 12-02-2010, 09:16 AM It's just like regular body filler, but it's aluminised! So it's more resistant to water and it's also a lot harder!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v24/Bonello/a84339cd.jpg
All you do is mix the filler with a hardener then apply with a spreader, sand and paint. Easy!
It drys super hard, so be careful where it ends up, i.e. In the bearings!! Mask liberally!
Cheers
Dave
gts455 12-31-2010, 01:19 AM Wow Dave, project looks amazing so far. Cannot wait for more updates and a finished project. Thumbs up.
Lycon86 01-01-2011, 07:52 AM Cheers! Progress is slow...really slow but steady! I'll have my engine rebuilt and in my frame by mid Jan! But only one I sort the forks and shock out! They are like 11 year old now, and I boubt they've had a service! So they are getting a full tune!
Happy new year fellas!
Dave
Lycon86 01-14-2011, 10:33 AM Update! Engine compressions are down so heads are off! Result was carbed up valves! And while the heads are off I'm junking the daft quieting gear, on the cam sprockets! That should free up some rotational mass and give me a massive 1.2bhp hike! Heh!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v24/Bonello/e62714fd.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v24/Bonello/1601976e.jpg
Rolling chassis soon!
SubSailor 01-14-2011, 12:55 PM I've read that the quieting gears are also there to prevent torsional harmonics on the cams.
Some engines that were raced had thier cams shear near the drive gears (OEM cams are cast).
In many of these cases, the quieting gears had been removed to lose weight/rotational mass.
It's not a confirmed hypothesis, but until proven, it's worth consideration.
Lycon86 01-14-2011, 02:28 PM Yeah well, that's why it's a "track/experiment bike". So in the event of catastrophic failure, I'll let you lot know! ;)
God loves a trier after all!
Lycon86 01-16-2011, 08:00 PM ***Update***
While the engine and suspension are undergoing surgery, I thought I'd quickly sort out the clamps. I wish I'd taken pictures before, because this bike has had a hard bloody 30k life and farther time was not kind to it!
They looked as if they had been ate by a badger and then shat out! But all I could manage was a few crudly photgraphed "after" pics!
All I did was basically the same routine as the shock linkage but I used aluminised engine enamel and sanded the face down with 120 grade emery paper, using a block for the face(to take out the war scars left by the last gash owner) then clearcoat the lot!
Oh and new bearings too! Not taper rollers, but Honda standard!

Lycon86 01-17-2011, 11:21 AM More bad pictures I'm afaraid! But when I get back from

SubSailor 01-20-2011, 09:27 PM You said you replaced the stem with OEM ball bearings.
Was there no place that carried All Balls tapered roller bearing kits?
This would be the perfect opportunity (a bit late I know but still...)
Also this would be a great opportunity to find how much the frame weighs. :)
Also, nice floor!
Lycon86 01-21-2011, 03:34 AM I suppose I could have put tapered headrace roller bearings in, but I wanted them fast and my local bearing supplier only had OE spec replacements. It's not too late tho! I can always just take the clamps off again. And il weigh the frame for you l, if that's what you want? Haha!
And thankyou! It is a nice floor! :)
Lycon86 01-29-2011, 08:52 AM I hope your happy now SubSailor!!! Hahaha!

Lycon86 02-27-2011, 06:36 PM http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v24/Bonello/508b6b65.jpg
Carbon or not this is just ugly! I've looked all around for a decent shape hugger, but found nout!
So while fitting my new carbon hugger to my recently crashed R6(nearly fixed), I noticed the swing'arms are a very similar shape! so I took the old one out the bin(wasteful, I know) and offered it up to my SP swing'er. And its only nearly there!!!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v24/Bonello/4abc54c5.jpg
Granted, there was a little of the "I'll make it fit" mentality at work, but it was less hassle then fitting the afore mentioned ugly hugger.
...and that was designed to fit!
Anyway its on now all thanks to these things...

GEARHEAD69 04-21-2011, 09:27 PM 2 thumbs up for that war tattered RC51 ending up in your hands!!! Fabulous
ChucktownRC 04-22-2011, 12:18 PM Nice work! I Sadly laid my 03 down at Roebling Road and in the process of rebuilding. Mostly Fairing damage but still heartbreaking. How did you polish the swingarm?
Lycon86 04-22-2011, 02:16 PM Cheers! Not to worry! Just do what I do and use Daft Punk as a guid to riding bikes;
Buy it, use it, break it, fix it,
Trash it, change it, mail - upgrade it...
The swinger are was a tricky one. I was going to have it mirror finish, but I was too lazy. So settled on a brushed look. Then I used 2k laquer to coat it(wish I hadn't now).
But all you do is start with say, 80 grit and progressively work up to P2000 wet and dry. Then use a mop and polish. Or paint buffer(messy).
Sorted the wiring too...

Did you polish the pipes or did you ceramic coat them?
Lycon86 04-22-2011, 08:59 PM Polish. I could of got them mirror finish. But I thought that looked a bit cheap. I used a D.A. Sander with 180 discs, to remove the machine marks and lessen some of the pitting. Then I finished with a 320 disc. And finally a(very) light polish by hand with some autosol. Very, very simple to do.
Dave
madbuyer 04-23-2011, 12:03 AM Had you not stated that these were polished I would have mistaken them for a QPQP finish. Very nice.

Skidmarx make some very nice race fairings, which come with dzus fasteners. And as for colour, I'm going pearl white. Not sure on decals tho. might just go for the basic racer look.

Yeah that was my first 'proper' bike. It's a 2000 model with 4.5k on it. My 09 R6 is no where near as clean. Ha!
Dave
gts455 06-11-2011, 03:00 PM HA nice. Yeah been following your progress with the RC and its going to be pretty sick.....can't wait for the end result.
Love the RS250's. Pretty hard to find over here in the states, but i want one so bad. Really am in love with that bike.
Looking forward to more updates.
Lycon86 06-11-2011, 03:13 PM Sweet. Cheers! Well enjoy!

Colour is pearl White. Needs flatting down and polishing before I throw the thing together. Nearly start time.
Lycon86 06-28-2011, 04:50 PM Had some decals made up. Was a bit of a rush job applying them. But they're close enough!

Lycon86 08-16-2011, 03:19 AM We Have ignition...eventually!
There was a wring problem in the harness before the front coil and after much cranking over(wet plugs) it eventually fired up! Good times.
MorpheusRS 08-16-2011, 11:27 AM wow, looks like an amazing project! good job! its coming along very nicely.
JaeRich33 09-26-2011, 07:13 PM Come on Dave.. we gotta see the finished product! I've been coming back just to check the progress! Awesome work.

Sorry chaps! The SPs has kinda taken a back seat untill I can find more cash. Ha! I've considered selling my 250. But after much thought, it just ain't gunna happen, I love that bike too much. Heh! I do have some more progress pictures though...

I couldn't be hashed sourcing or making a race harness and relocating everything, so I've just trimmed what I didn't need and neatened everything up.

I've also made an alloy bracket for the fuel catch tank, and riveted it to the intake snorkel. which looks pretty neat!
Still need to sort the gearing, tyres, brakes, exhausts and fairing out. Then a powe commander and dyno. Then fun!
Dave
JaeRich33 10-04-2011, 04:19 PM It's coming together nicely. You give me hope that one day I may be able to fix one myself :D I'll definitely be staying tuned until it's completed

Lycon86 01-03-2012, 09:39 AM Hey Y'all!
Got a loan out for a new bike and what with my penny pinching nature, I've managed to get a deal! which means I can throw more money at the SP!!
So a bit more progress...

Lycon86 01-03-2012, 03:25 PM Cheers ChucktownRC! Its all been pretty easy to do really! getting the engine back in the frame was a massive swine tho!
Make sure you get your restoration on here too!

Lycon86 01-07-2012, 12:16 PM Started it up. And the sound is, erm...awesome! Lots of flames to begin with, what with all the assembly lube i used and Unburned fuel in the exhausts. But awesome! Idles perfectly and revs so free without any lag or hunting!
Power commander soon!

Lycon86 01-07-2012, 07:43 PM Hmm! I've just noticed that all the bolts on the brakes, wheels, clamps and frame are titanium! Credit where credit is due! The guy I bought this wreck off might have neglected and abused this bike, but he sure as hell threw a lot of money at it!
Score me!
Video soon!
madbuyer 01-08-2012, 10:45 AM Nice updates!

budoka 01-10-2012, 06:12 PM Hey Lycon, where are you at? I think you're in the UK but where?
Lycon86 01-11-2012, 12:34 AM Hey Lycon, where are you at? I think you're in the UK but where?
I'm in Newcastle. The north east of England. :)
budoka 01-11-2012, 11:53 AM Yeah, I thought you were over there. We're seeing more and more UK members on forums over here, good to see things going in a more worldly way I think. We all have much to share/learn from each other. Aside from our beloved RC's and 'blades etc, you guys get alot more spanky bikes to choose form than we do. Our N/A market is pretty unforgiving with certain models and how the buying public takes to them. Sad really. So enough of the warm and fuzzys, do some more on that baby of yours!; mines just a stock daily (seasonal anyway) rider scoot, with a bit of low buck "necessities" that herself allows me. I have to live vicariously through builds like yours and some of the others here.:o:cool:
Lycon86 01-11-2012, 02:57 PM Cheers budoka. I have noticed that parts for these things are a bit sparse...and expensive! Like at the minute, Im looking all over the place for some discs! need to explore other avenues. CBR discs fit I think?
But thanks for all the positive comments! Most other lads on other forums always blast me when I try any non conventional modding! But everyone is an expert behind a PC moniter! heh!
Im gunna fit a dry break coupling to the fuel line next. Because I needed the tank off the other day and it was messy and took too long. and I nearly dropped my tank. The coupling is good for like 2 bar, well above the SPs fuel pressure from the pump! So should be cushty!
Dave
budoka 01-11-2012, 04:39 PM Not real sure about the fitment of other Honda discs. The part #'s are all slightly different. My '03 SP2 is: rh 45120-MCF-D31, lh 45220-MCF-D31. The CBR600f4 same year is the same prefix r&l but MBW-E11. The 1000rr is MFL-003, and the 1100xx is MAT-E02 (prefix is the same again). And the SP disc IS more expensive (Honda prices anyway). Just exactly what the small differences are I can't say, or whether they'd fit. Then again I'm not a partsman so that likely explains it too:o:D
Lycon86 01-11-2012, 05:53 PM Well before I bought one I always wondered what "SP" stood for. Now I just assume its for "Special Price"! :p

vfrsam 01-11-2012, 07:09 PM looking good
JanJayAnd 01-11-2012, 11:39 PM The 06-07 CBR1000rr (Fireblade) front disks will fit. They are the same diameter ,have the same offset, and bolt pattern.
Lycon86 01-12-2012, 02:53 AM Brilliant! They were bound to use the same discs on other models! I'm pretty sure I've read that SubSailor said he bought some after market disk with multiple bikes listed.
The 06-07 CBR1000rr (Fireblade) front disks will fit. They are the same diameter ,have the same offset, and bolt pattern.
MakisRC51 01-12-2012, 05:53 AM Same disks in diameter and offset have the following models:
CBR 600RR 07 and on
CBR 1000RR 06 and on
VFR 1200 2010 and on (not sure about the offset though, due to the ABS)
The CBR 1100XX has 310mm disks, the CBR 929/954 have 330mm (same offset and I am considering it hahaha), CBR F4i has 296mm and the CB1300 has 310mm disks.
MakisRC51 01-12-2012, 05:56 AM A good mod would be rotors from the CBR 954 (2003) and calipers from the VFR 1200 (6piston radial) if you can have custom adaptors made. But if you have to buy them new from Honda, then you should go for Brembo or Braketech......you will pay the same and you will have ten times the brakes. It's only worth it if you can find them as used parts.
Lycon86 01-12-2012, 07:24 AM I've got some. Brembo 4 pad calipere off an RSV-R Factory. But need the mounting brackets. And I'd still need the discs. I thought the CBR600RR discs were smaller in diameter then the fireblades? Meh. Think I'll just have to wait a bit longer and get some brembo hpk discs to fit the standard wheel!
MakisRC51 01-12-2012, 07:39 AM Ben in rc51parts.com can help you with the adaptors.
The 600's with the USD fork, have 320mm disks.
You find good deals on eBay on Brembo rotors some times
Lycon86 01-20-2012, 06:38 AM http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v24/Bonello/6e1e2ecf.jpg
Got myself some Dunlop D211 slicks. Gunna fit them at work tomorrow. :)
Also, I'm having some steel braided lines made up. could anyone help me with the lengths I need, left and right? I've misplaced my old ones!
Lycon86 01-20-2012, 05:52 PM Actually forget that! Got the lengths from guy at goodridge! Super helpful! Should have the lines by next week. :)
Lycon86 01-21-2012, 02:54 PM Ok. So the tyres are on. But I opted for a 55 profile and the tyre is rubbing on the swing'arm. So I need an extra link for the chain. Boo! Also the hugger has be altered further! Also boo!
AV8R27 01-22-2012, 11:12 AM Just went back and read this front to back...extremely nice and tasteful project you have in the works, friend. Looking forward to the follow...keep it coming!
mw44mag 01-25-2012, 06:34 PM I'm with AV8R27 and about 3 hours south of him. Awesome build and thanks for linking to my gpr thread. Keep us k updated and can't wait to see those dyno numbers.
Lycon86 01-27-2012, 06:28 AM Cheers guys!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v24/Bonello/0e9d84d6.jpg
Got these to fit and I'm picking up my brake lines tomorrow. So I can take it for a little blast up and down the lane!!
Lycon86 01-29-2012, 06:12 PM Got my lines. But the company I used, f@cked up. They supplied me with a bare steel braid, instead of the clear coated steel braid I asked for! So straight away that annoyed me!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v24/Bonello/c29af88b.jpg
So I had to fly to Maplins and buy some cable sheath and heat shrink! Doesn't look as gash as I first thought. Although clear heat shrink would have been better. But there was none available. :(
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v24/Bonello/e9539062.jpg
But the hardware is all Goodridge, so quality isn't an issue!
Next I further tidied up the wiring so I can get everything ready for the fairings, I have yet to buy. And drilled the Durbahn air intake to accept the MAP sensor.

I wanted to take it out and just quickly bed the pads in. But it was -2°C outside and slicks and ice would be tempting fate!
But I feel I've atleast achieved something today! Oh I secured the remote adjuster for the shock too! That was annoying me.
So all in all, I've really just been polishing off things I should have finished ages ago!
Dave
Lycon86 01-29-2012, 06:21 PM I also wired the dash so it's illuminated with the ignition. I hate wires! So not actually having the Light switchgear was a total ball ache! But I got there in the end.
madbuyer 01-29-2012, 07:00 PM I just noticed something....those forks really are high on the top triple....is that where you will run them? I only noticed this as I pulled my forks for service today.:D
Lycon86 01-29-2012, 07:22 PM I just noticed something....those forks really are high on the top triple....is that where you will run them? I only noticed this as I pulled my forks for service today.:D
Good eye!!
Yeah I've raised the forks 5mm to have a play with the geometry. But seeing as I've put a 55 profile rear tyre on, I think I might drop them back. Or have them 2.5mm max. I did this to my R6 and it made it more willing to go from upright to full cranked over. I get more feel for what the front end is doing too!
madbuyer 01-29-2012, 08:20 PM Okay...so the haze from my Crown/Coke eyes were looking correctly. ;)
Lycon86 01-30-2012, 05:39 PM OK, after running the bike for 20 mins I eventually succumbed to the worry that the white smoke out the exhaust wasn't just condensation from the combustion process!
I would have blamed my work on the engine earlier in the build, had it not been for the unusually high fuel consumption. I lifted the tank and could find no leaks on the Pump so I thought an Injector might be stuck open! which would have made sense, with all the fouled plugs! But this is rare!
Also the smell of fuel from the throttle body was overpowering when the pump was priming! So thats the injectors ruled out. Long story short - Its the fuel pressure regulator!
Im hoping this is common! Because this injector assy is supposed to be off a "very low mileage" bike!!!
Dave

Now I'm starting to feel a bit paranoid with all these pressure regulators failing lately.
I guess I'll order one as a spare.

Weakest point on a Honda.....all of them! Fuel is nasty shit anyway, especially if your bike has been exposed to some of the nastier grades of racing fuel.
Lycon86 01-31-2012, 02:40 AM It went in a big way like. It was squirting fuel out at pressure! :(
But it's sorted now. Just wish I'd clocked it sooner! I might have saved myself some fuel money! Haha!
