I've been riding for about 3yrs now I'm looking to buy a RC51. I currently own a 94 zx7r and I'm wondering if I would be ready for a 1000 . Any advise or suggestions I will consider.

The RC will give you linear power as opposed to the in-lines which will be rpm driven. The torque is exceptional. It's stability is also stellar. It's not the lightest or most nimble, BUT it's still very forgiving. I went to the RC from a CBR 600 and I haven't looked back...

If you have been riding for 3 years I am sure you can handle an RC51. At street cruising speeds the bike performance isn't that much different then any in line machine. The way you use the throttle will change. You have a lot more tourqe in the low end. Just take it easy for awhile untill you get used to it. Once you have owned an RC riding any other bike just isn't the same. Have fun and be safe.

I also have driven 3 years ZXR. Then 5
years of super hawk. now the 3rd year RC51.
the torque and the motor traction are different than at 4 cylinder engines.
the engine brakes is stronger than at 4 cylinder.
one must switch also less by the torque.
I hope,her have me understood.

BTW, what year bike did you find? Dealer/private? I bought mine last summer, 1200 original miles, SP2, 2003. I think I paid too much, $7K, but the bike is like brand new, had tons of Honda factory spares (former owner was a Honda MC tech) and Leo Vince slip on exhaust and chain sprocket change.

I've been riding 36 years, I chuckled, the 29 year old owner was "warning" me of the savagery of the RC, HO-HUM compared to the arm straightening ability of an Gixxer 1000, CBR 1000, or R1,. Sorry, Liter bikes I find are much more EXPLOSIVE than the RC in acceleration. But none offer the cool accelerative traction in corners, SEXY MUSIC of the motor, or classic styling. I've had the rockets, this bike is da shit!

I think the Ducati 1198S or 1098R will be quite the arm straightening experience for a V-twin.
A twin with 170 to 180 HP and 97 Ft/Lbs of torque with a dry weight less than 400 Lbs would be a LOT of crazy fun.

WITHOUT A DOUBT! HAVEN'T TRIED ONE YET, Thank God! I'd want one!

Visited a Ducati dealer today.
Glanced at the 1198S price tag and saw around $23000.
They also had a 1098S Tricolore and 1098S.
Nice bikes, but too much for my paycheck.

I've always marched to a different drummer and I love the fact that my bike doesn't sound like all the others.
It could even be the slowest bike in the bunch and I'd still dig the sound (which is great!).
If everybody had an I-4, life would be boring.
Just as if everybody owned the same car with the same color.

I can relate to the "different drummer." Just ask my wife! Those who have ridden behind me say my bike makes a low freq. "pulsing sound," more like the sound of an on-coming train rather than the vacuum cleaner sound an I-4 makes. BTW: Something tells me you're far from the slowest out there! LOL

My mind is infantile as well.
When I tell people that I am 40, they swear I am lying, they all think I am 30.
Those that know me on the other hand swear then I am 12, LOL. :D

As to the orig' post: yes, you're ready! Go for gold, my friend!

You're ready. Banikj is right; the great torque allows lower RPM through corners (thus avoiding hi-sides) until you get used to it. I will never have any other bike.

Got you beat by one year! Don't you get tired of these young bucks complaining about how uncomfotable the Rc is? Turned 62 last month. It's like the guy said, you've got to get off for gas every 120-130 miles anyway. 04 owner, working on getting the chicken strip down to zero.

Well you guys got me beat by 10 years. I'm only 53.
Ditto on the chicken strips.
I've got the rear close to zero, but there's not many quality twisty roads in my area. Mostly flat and straight.
The middle of the rear tire wears out long before the shoulders.
Have to change out the rear about every 90 days.

rcCARVER
12-14-2009, 09:39 PM
53? Count your blessings! Chopped the ice off the driveway Sunday and took it out with COLD tires, and broke the rear loose, so probably knocked some off the strip.Every 90 days? Man, you do some runnin'

Well I bought my '02 RC51 April of last year with 25K miles on the clock.
I'm almost to 47K miles today.
Now 5.5 months of last year my bike was in pieces while I was refurbishing it.
So most of those miles were in a 17 month time frame.
So on average, about 1158 miles a month. So a rear tire lasts me about 3400-3500 miles.
The front tire lasts about 9 months.

Wrexham is in North Wales and about 160 miles to Snetterton, Oulton Park is the closest to me 18 miles, ferry to Isle of Man 25 miles, and very good bikeing roads on my door step but not at this time of year.

Total respect for Isle of Man riders. Raced formula fords at Brands Hatch, hot-lapped Silerstone back in '73. England's countryside is beautiful. You're lucky. Do they let you hot-lap Oulten, Donnington, Thruxton ect.?

Not sure what hot- lap is ? but we have track days at most tracks with 3 class of riders, novice, intermediate, and the fast boys, the TT is something else have a look on utube.

Hot-lap means you have the track basically to yourself and go as fast as you can. An old expression I probably need to stop using. Probably the same as track days except if there are a lot of other bikes or cars out there with you, you are hindered a bit. Cheers!

As long as you ride within your capabilities then you can safely ride whatever you want!
I passed my bike test in Scotland and went straight out and bought a Fireblade.

Have fun Mr Sanchez :)

I have owned 2 ZX7R's, 2 R1's. I ridden a 998 n a Hooter's superbike GSXR 750. I currently own 07 ZX10R n the RC51. Since I bought the RC51 my ZX10R hasn't left the garage. The handling n brakes r next to none. They r a blast to ride. U'll be hooked as soon as u ride one as was I.

I bought an 03 this weekend, all i can say is in the city it's a little like riding an untamed horse as opposed to a well trained trail horse - but I'm really enjoy this. Outside the city its f-ing perfect.
i stalled it a couple times my first day on it while in the city, until i realized you clutch more at low rpms than i did on my cbr.

My RC is my track bike though. I ride a 470 DRZ for most of my back road hooliganism.
Been thinking about turning the RC back into a street bike though. I do love to listen to the boom.

I'm running -1 +2 and it definately helps. My bike has only seen the track since I picked it up a few months back. Although I have purchased all the street stuff (except turn signals). I could have it on the road today, but it's so damn uncomfortable, I would rather ride my Busa (on the street that is). This bike was made for the track, and feels very at home there. Maybe okay for the occasional spirited street ride :D I emphazie spirited!

Oh yea.... very familiar with the plank... had a F4i back in 2002, and a 954 a few years later. Same feel as those two. But on the track, I'm not sitting on the sit too much, mostly balancing left and right on the pegs.
