OK. I'm new to the RC51 (just bought mine from a great gent in FL) but I haven't had the chance to ride mine yet (currently in Iraq). I have been looking at the Chain/sprocket upgrade. On my CBR900RR, the optical pickup for the speed was at the front sprocket, and I was told by a Honda technician that as long as the front sprocket was unchanged, the speedometer was "relatively" accurate. Given this, is it reasonable to assume that by not changing the front sprocket (16 tooth) and raising the rear sprocket (43 or 44 teeth) eliminates the need for the speedo healer? Or is the speed sensor somewhere else in the bike and any change will require the box?

The speedometer is calibrated for stock (16/40) final drive ratio.
Change any sprocket (front or rear) and your final drive ratio is off.
The Speedo-Healer interconnects between the speed sensor output from the engine to the gauges.
I've heard you can get quite accurate readings with these units if set in conjunction with a GPS.

As a side note, the Ducati 999 has it's speed sensor at the rear wheel.
So about the only way it's calibration can be off is if a taller tire is used, such as 190/55 vs. 190/50.

The speedo and odometer receive their input from the speed sensor located at the rear of the bike.
It's a hall-effect sensor that generates rotation pulses from the counter-shaft.
Those pulses are then used to calculate speed & distance.
The Speedo-Healer interconnects between the sensor and it's destination, and allows modification/correction of the pulse count output.
So yes, it should not only show accurate speed, but accurate odometer readings as well.

Of course you can.
Although you may have to either install a longer chain or have some links added depending on the size.

The speedo-healer seems to run about $110 (less S&H) on average.
