Choke on an 04??

Ok, I'm new to an RC51 and a v-twin bike in general...while putting cans on the 04 that I just bought I looked up and saw a choke??

Ok, I don't think I'm a complete idiot, but I haven't known a FI engine to have a choke?

What am I missing?

It's not a "choke", it's fast idle.........It's a circuit that allows the engine to up the RPM's for warm up. Chokes change the air/fuel mixture for warm up on carbs. The RC has a very "cold" engine period and the fast idle def helps.

ok...got it.

I knew it had to be something else...I just about flipped out thinking the bike had an engine swap done with one with a carb and I wasn't told!!

Thank you, I would have looked it up in the owners manual, but somehow the previous owner lost it.

Check the manual - I think it tells you to not use it for very long. I use it for about 30 seconds.

I usually pull it out all the way to start a cold engine.
As the engine warms and the revs increase, I gradually push it in until it's fully seated with the engine at normal idle RPM.

well, it all depends on the temp outside of course, if it's hot then obviously not long, like subsailor said enough to get it warm. I've ridden in to work on days where it's 20 deg outside and that takes a lot longer prob 5-7 mins on fast idle.

Why does the manual call it a choke? I was flipping through looking for a wire diagram and did see those words...

Probably because most folks don't grok the "fast idle" description.
