Well, I'd say get the last (5 door) model, as it's the best one available in N. America and make sure it's an STi, not a narrower bodied WRX. If you see a car you like, send me details and I can tell a lot about it from good engine bay pictures, front bumper and general condition.
Shame you can't have cars of this age directly from Japan in Canada. We have 4 lovely condition STi Subarus 2 of which were bought recently for new stock, but that's just not a possibility so let's dwell on reality.
