I have a close friend that is a Dodge/Chrysler/Plymouth race car historian. One of his passtimes is to authenticate original race cars and debunk fakes and clones. One day he asked if I wanted to go and watch him break someone's heart, and I said sure. This local guy claimed that he had a prototype Hemi block that had been cast from a modified Wedge block mold, and it was well known that all of the prototype "mules" had been destroyed at the factory. We visited his shop and looked at the block very closely and my friend came to the conclusion that it was either authentic or a very elaborate fake. We called a contact that had worked in the factory during the Hemi development and he gave us a few very specific things to look for and requested that we send him a few pictures. After a few minutes, it was confirmed authentic. It appears that someone thought it would be a horrible shame to destroy a perfectly good engine and somehow made off with it, and kept it hidden for over 40 years. After his death, his heirs sold off his collection and the strange block surfaced. Now it is practically a museum piece.

I found, read, posted up just prior to going to bed.
I fell asleep thinking about those awesome looking race machines being cut up and beaten to death by hand and burned or worse yet being pulled up by a magnet and dropped into a shredder.
I woke up with the chills and feeling like something was horribly wrong.
My wife said I was moving around like crazy and making all kinds of noises.
What a nightmare.

It's a shame. i think another big reason was taxes, otherwise i would think they would just stick them in a private manufacturer Museum. Think Honda does this or started doing it, they have quite a few bikes spared.

Stay tuned, Honda is building a new museum in Ohio near the Marysville plant.

Its down the street from the retooled Acura NSX plant.

Reverse of this is, when one rare gem rises to the top its just that more amazing to see.

Great article. Thanks for sharing it with us here, smoker. I laughed at your nightmare, but it shows how close old bikes are to your heart.

Honda has a museum at Motegi, which we plan to visit at the end of October, whilst attending the Moto GP. Apparently there are some but certainly not all the race bikes there (Will take pics!)

Many of their cars are lend out to museums & other places and Nissan has a huge warehouse full of old concept, race & rally cars stored away – which I got to visit once.
Was incredible to see. Hundreds of cars - lovingly cared for (In an old Nissan factory building). Not a museum, only possible to see by special invitation. Some rally & race cars still had flies all over their fronts.

Very few people get to see this collection, but at least it's there. We did plead with Nissan's top executives to turn it into a proper museum, but it's just not a priority for them, sadly.

Euro RC51 SP2: HRC WSB Ti Hi-Level, T1 Airbox & Snorkel, PCIII, Dymag CA5 Carbon Wheels, Ti64 Spindles (F, R & Swing Arm), Mori Link, Maxton GP7 Shock & Ohlins 832 Forks, Brembo GP Calipers & SBK narrow track (F), Braketech Disc (R), Brembo billet Underslung x 2 Brembo RCS, Tyga Triple, 7075 Stem, Probolt Titanium all over, Babyface rearsets, MR Complete Carbon Lineup, Custom Undertail & CBR 1000 LED, Watsen LED Indicators, Harris Brace, Giles clip-ons, Corbin seat, etc. 2013 BOTY.
