Steering stem HELP!!

My bars were rocking back and forth so I took off the top triple to investigate. Locknut came off easy but the adjuster nut just spun in place, The threads were stripped. Ordered a new stem and set of bearings from Allballs. I took the old inner races out because I wasn't sure if they were compatible with the new set. In a rush i didn't pay attention to how they were positioned in the steering head. I put em in so they're flush with the frame. When I tried to spin the nuts on the stem i can't get the lock nut to catch. Are the races recessed? and if so how much and what do I bang them with? The old races, PVC pipe maybe? Thanks guys!

2 wheels 1 love

That is talking about pulling the stem off the lower triple.

If you can't get the stem up far enough into the frame then your races aren't installed correctly. They should be installed so that they sit flush with the lip that is inside the neck on the frame. And the recessed part that the balls sit in on the race should be facing up on the upper bearing and down on the lower bearing. Sounds like you need to pull the thing apart and take a look at it.
