well, that was a first

Pulled into the beer store on the bike and a black Silverado pulls up next to me. Guy gets out and says "hey buddy can I check your vin?" I asked why. He says " I work with auto theft task force, and there's been a lot of stolen bikes and I noticed your custom paint" lol wut? Custom paint equals mismatched fairings.

Could have been a dick but I hate thieves (especially bike thieves) and he probably could have given me a ticket for no mirrors/inspection if he wanted to.

Glanced at my vin and said alright you're good it matches your plate. Wtf ooook

Drove off. He was obviously a police officer

I wouldn't let him near my bike unless he showed some ID. What law did he suspect you of breaking? That's the only reason whatsoever for him to approach you in the first place.

i might have been speeding down the service road, but he said nothing about me breaking any laws when he walked up.

all he said was can i check your vin. instead of making a big deal of it, i just let him look at it and be on his way, but it was definitely uncalled for.

no id, but he was definitely a cop. dressed up like the task force guys ive seen before, gun on his hip, typical police electronics in his truck.

I'm sure you played it right - all things considered. I was venting more than advising.

I agree with both of you. I'd want to tell him to fuck off. In reality when I see uniform / gun / cop stuff, I'd prob let him look.

Remember, there's no expectation of privacy to a VIN (especially for a vehicle that was used on a public roadway with an equipment infraction; supported by existing case law).

Since the officer was an auto theft task force guy, the last thing he was gonna do was write out an equipment violation ticket - they are after the bigger fish swimming in the pond.

Did you actually see a badge or identification?

If no ID, you don't have to say shit.....its time folks started to understand their rights and protect your right to privacy.

If he wanted to see the VIN, Cobra is right. It there for viewing.

If he was going to nail you for speeding, he would have....not based on your response to see his identification.

You gave me no reason to believe this guy was a cop except that you suspected he was. We have a right to see identification if not clearly identifiable and then you still do not have to answer any questions unless you are being charged.

i agree with this all, but the way i saw it, my bike isnt stolen, so why make a mountain out of a mole hill?

really saw no reason to ask to see i.d as he was cleary identifiable as a cop. ive seen these guys before.

mainly, the reason for my post, was how odd it was that he singled me out because of my "custom paint." i.e it wasnt a traffic stop
