VFR800FI to keep the RC51 company

Since a few members also have VFRs (both 750 and 800), I figured I'd chime in with the one I bought last hear.
It's a 2000 VFR800FI with 34K miles on the odometer when I bought it.

I wanted a 5th Gen as it was Pre-VTEC and has the gear drive cams like its big brother.
Mechanically the bike is sound, cosmetically not so good. But I'll be replacing the bodywork eventually.

So far I've installed a Traxxion Dynamics AK-20 cartridge kit up front, giving spring preload, compression, and rebound adjustment. And I installed a Penske 8983 shock in back.

While I had the upper cowl and forks off, I also went and swapped out the incandescent bulbs for LED in the instrument panel. Now I everything is nice and bright, day or night. And installed a set of Heli-Bars.

Since I had to remove the OEM exhaust headers to install the Penske shock, I went with the new design Dekelvic stainless system as well.

I removed the O2 sensors ('00-'01 had them along with a cat) and installed a PCV with O2 eliminator plugs.
The bike came with a Staintune high-mount slip-on, which mated to the new Dekelvic headers.

Now, not only does the old fat lady sound good, she actually handles pretty good too!

Still have a way to go (esp. with bodywork), but at least I can ride her while buying it piecemeal.
The prior owner laid her down on the left side, so the bodywork is cracked up around the left turn signal.

I'll be swapping the yellow for red to match the RC51.
While the yellow is highly visible, it just doesn't suit me.

Nice to see your's Sub and that you've improved it a bit too. How do you find the linked brakes? I recently bought a red one for a friend here (They were restricted to 75 bhp in Japan). We fitted a used European ECU, full range Speedo and a mint Akrapovic Titanium slip-on exhaust. She seems very happy with the bike.

I only have this model because it's been mine since nearly new and a lot of great memories with this bike, but if I were thinking of buying one now, I'd either get the FS-FV model (Which has a slight resemblance to the NR750), or the same as Sub's.

I like the last 750's most. They're slightly lighter (not a lot!) than the earlier pro-arm models and have nice touches like semi floating front discs and black wheels. Parts are slightly easier to find for them too. Obviously 98-01 VFR 800's are the easiest to find parts for of the cheaper non V-Tec bikes.

The one thing I don't like about the early 800's though is the design of the lights, especially the front indicators. They look like handles ferchrisakes! But that aside, I know they're great bikes.

Mine will be progressing more in the not too distant future. A Maxton GP10 shock arrived this morning and I'm in the midst of seeing how I can get a centre lock hub to fit instead of the 4 stud hub (The eccentric assembly of the Hawk has the same dimensions, but there are some differences with brake mount diameter, etc).

I've also e-mailed Dymag today to see if they'd make a 4 stud fitment, or one to match the Hawk's hub... If they do, well then more progress may be possible....

You have TWO VFR's and an RC51? - that's just spoiling yourself!

Will be interesting to hear of the differences between models once you get used to the new Viffer.

My wife calls it more than spoiled. Also have a 96 CBR900RR and an old restored Kaw 400 2 stroke.
The guy I bought it from gutted the stock system. I'm looking for a staintune for it. My 90 has one also. Compare apples to apples then.

A great collection of machines. Sweet!
Good to see you're a lifetimer on the RC51 on spite of all those bikes.
