Curious K&N filter question. Please help

I have K&N's on my RC51 and I remembered that last time I recharged them, that they have these little red sponge like things that go inside the filters. This seems like it would restrict the air flow I could be getting so I was wondering if anyone knows what these are and if I removed them, would there be any benefit? I just don't see the point of them. Thanks

It was placed in the left air filter to work with the flapper valve to quiet intake noise at certain RPMs.
You'll notice the OEM air filters are different part numbers as well for that reason, even though the right air filter works for both sides.
