install right rear set problems

Have a new right rear set to put in (after low side). It's just sinking in that I need to remove the rear cowl and drain the brake fluid first. (If I just open the "oil bolt" I get corrosive brake fluid over everything, right?) Any links out there that the Forum knows that might help me. (The service manual assumes I know how to do this as far as I can see--and I should!. When a fairing stay hit the deck when I loosened up the rear set, I knew I didn't. Little bent black metal band; sure it's a fairing stay, or ....) Thanks for any help. dreilly

Was your rear master cylinder damaged in the low side?
Because all you usually need to do is unbolt the master cylinder from the rearset to replace or swap rearsets.

No damage to cylinder, SubSailor. The "oil bolt" looked to me like it had to be disconnected. That's where I thought the brake fluid would come out. (The rear set is a nice OEM piece I bought from the h8redlights.) No hurry. Thanks! dreilly

The piece that fell off when you loosened the lower rearset bolt is a lower cowl mount bracket
It has metal tab that prevents it from rotating when fitted.
The other end that has the nut welded on, is where the lower cowl bolt fits.

end of right rear set thread

I was wrong about "oil bolts." Nothing about brake fluid.

To install the right rear set you need a snap ring pliers. You remove the ring which frees the brake pedal. The springs are then removable. You thread the brake light actuator into the new set. You need a new cotter pin when you break the one that's in the old set. That's the gist of it, anyway.
