You can start from here downloading the service manual.

Welcome Smokey, where are ya from? Service manual is a pretty vital piece of kit, especilly if you're doing your own wrenching like alot of us do.

Duct tape can't fix stupid...but it sure helps muffle the sound

Welcome Smokey51, I'm assuming you're in the US with a US bike. If so, use this download from the page Makis put up: •US VERSION RC51 Factory Service Manual SP-1 and SP-2 108.2 Mb

They also have a UK version. Aside from the obvious ,it's for UK bikes, but it lacks some of the details that the US version has. I use them both for reference, but mostly the US version.

Refer to the manual before you start swapping parts...may save you some dough...

Charging circuit is:
1) Stator
2) Reg/Rectigier
3) Battery

Using a good, healthy battery mounted on the bike, start your engine.
Using a volt meter, at DC scale, measure the voltage between the battery's terminals. You should read 13,5 to 14,3V at idle with your lights off (pull the headlight's plug off if you cannot switch it off).
With your high beam on you should read 13,2 to 13,8V
Reving the engine at 4500rpm you shouldn't exceed 14,8V in any case of the above.
Again at idle, switch the volt meter at AC scale and measure the three yellow cables coming from the stator at the rectifier's plug (don't unplug it though). Each one against the other two. You should read 14V more or less at idle (not less than 13V) and when reving at 4500rpm you should read close to 20V.
Tell us what you've found.
