2004 and 2002 tanks have the same wings as far as I know. It is the 2003 that is different.

yep, 2004 tank will line up with a 2001. It is the 2003 that is off.

2000, 2001, 2002, 2004 -tanks can all interchange and line up with each of the same years of side fairings. I cant site a certain reference that I know that, It's just been a process of remembering what people tried and reported on the forums. 2003 is noticablely off on the wing alignment from any other year.

I have a gas tank related question. I have been riding on my bike for months noticing anything, but brought the bike in to get maintenance and they said my gas tank has a slow leak, which they didn't notice until I pointed it out. Is there anything I can do besides buying a new one?

I had the same problem with mine, right next to the factory's weldings at it's base under the driver's seat where the pivot bolt goes.
I took it off, strip it from fuel pump and everything else and took it to a friend of mine and weld it carefully with oxygen-acetylene flame and a copper welding rod. Right where the factory's weldings are but the factory welds it here and there. I asked of my friend to weld it continuously all the way around.
Then sandpapered it and spray painted black. After all it is the part that hides under the seat and it is almost not visible at all. Did the job just right....
