Please help with a stupid question

Just baught my first rc51 2000 sp1 with 29k all stock and a beauty. I live in upstate ny and i have not really had a chance to ride it yet. I read something on here about a manual fan switch? Does this mean I have to turn a fan on myself to keep the bike from over heating? I have never heard of such a thing... Please help

The SP1 (which a 01 is) has a thermo switch in the left radiator. It turns the fan on at about 212-217. Some people will install a manual override switch. If this is done correctly, when the switch is in the OFF position the thermo switch will control the fan a normal but when it is in the ON position the fans will run all the time (while key is on). I use a thermo switch which comes on at 195.
