Unhappy Gas Smell

Hello gang,
as of late I have noticed an increased gas smell after riding ? takes a few hours for the smell to go away / leave the garage. I have checked both the bike and the ground and I see no leaks what so ever, just a very pronounced smell of gas. Hard to describe, but the smell is NOT that of fresh liquid per say, so I would almost lean towards exhaust leakage. I run mainly shell super, and once per month I use a little Lucas Fuel additive in the tank.

Any thoughts on what the issue could be ?

Check the rear mount on the tank. Just pull your seat and tail, then the bolts at the front of the tank and lift it up and look for leaks around the bracket. It could also just be the banjo bolt for the pressure line. The pinch welded seam that runs all the way around the tank can also develope leaks, but it is less common. My track tank had that issue and now has a bead running all the way around the seam, of course the mount is leaking now.

You might be able to see it from the underside back by the shock, but it will be easier to find if you lift the tank.

Leaks tend to happen around this bracket. It is more prevalent on the SP1 tanks, but can still happen on SP2 tanks. There have been guys who were able to get Honda to replace them, but it has to be on a tank that has never had damage or repairs, and with a good dealer that will work with you and Honda North America.

With my track tank, I never saw fuel on the ground but I did see a little bit around the top of shock.

If you want to bring it down to my place, I might have time this weekend to take a look at it if you want.

This sounds like the common fuel tank leak. Man do I know about this problem. I'm still dealing with it in your case I hope it's not the tank

Thanks loco...I am hoping it is a small fix...I did notice in the last 2 or 3 days more decel pooping than before. I HOPE it is my bike running "rich" and a simple tweak of the PC III will fix it. My new ( new to me ) CF airbox is in, and in a week or so I will have enough cash to have it put in along with a new set of throttle bodies.

But w/ B Miller being close to me, I will run it past him first to get an idea of the direction I should go. I wish I knew more about bike engines so I could diagnose and fix things myself, but that knowledge escapes me. So I prefer to pay the guys that DO know WTF they are doing....

Yeah, Sunday will work for me. Do you still have my number?

I can take a look at it, but if it is the bracket you'll have to find someone who welds to take care of it for you as I don't have a welder. Some people are scared to weld on gas tanks, mostly out of ignorance though as they can be made safe to work on.

We can definitely get you pointed in the right direction though.

Dang, let me know how this goes for you. I've also noticed a more pronounced gassy-exhaust smell from the bike after sitting from a ride. It's more on my clothes and gear now too.

I also have noticed more deceleration backfiring than when I picked the bike up last October. It's got Sato lows and a PCIIIr.

---Slight threadjack---
Does anybody else's non-oem slipons seem to rotate on their own? I've noticed mine want to rotate a few degrees after a few hundred miles - I wonder if I'm getting some exhaust leakage because of this?
