Help, anybody had this problem before?

It started a few days ago while i was riding to work. The little red coolant temperature indicator light came on like the bike was overheating. But when i checked the temp on the gauge it was the normal running temp. now the red high temp light randomly turns on and off. I checked the coolant level and its good. Any ideas what else it could be?

If the coolant temperature is definitely not out of toloerance, the I'd guess a possible temperature sensor problem.

Item 13 in the diagram.

I've had them fail in cars as well.

I would think that if the temp sensor was bad the temp gauge would get a bad read or no read at all. Ive been watching it like a hawk the past few days and it seams to be working perfectly. Any idea at what temp the red light is supposed to come on? Is the light controlled by the ecu or does it have its own sensor?

The coolant temp numbers will start blinking, and the temp indicator will light when the coolant temp reaches 251 deg F. which is the critical temp.

If the coolant temp reaches 251 F, then pull over and allow the engine to cool.
Otherwise, you risk damaging the engine.

The coolant temp sensor reports to the ECU which controls the instrument panel.
