Clutch not disengaging completely after replacing Sprockets and Chain

Hi RCers,
Question, this weekend I replaced the drive system on the RC and after putting everything back together, the clutch is not disengaging completely.
Service manual doesn't give much insight. Thoughts? Do I need to bleed the clutch hydraulics?

I'd try bleeding the system.

You wouldn't think it necessary to bleed the clutch, since you never really open up that slave housing. But somehow they can take in a little air. I don't know how, but that happened to me too. Bled clutch and all was fine.

My clutch master cylinder needed rebuilding last year. A friend was messing with my bike and noticed bubbles forming in my reservoir every time the clutch was pulled in and out. I'd take a look at that, too. Doesn't seem likely since you didn't mess with the master in changing the sprockets, but it's always a possibility

Any honda OEM parts vendor should be able to get you a "rebuild" kit and it takes a few minutes to replace.. depending on how long it takes you to put the blasted o-rings onto the piston. That and the rebuild kit is only $40-50 or so.

When you remove the front sprocket's cover, you also remove the slave clutch cylinder cause it is mounted on it.
If you let it hanging or, in any case, the slave cylinder is positioned lower than the master cylinder, gravity through the fluid, slowly pushes the slave cylinder's piston outwards.
So that causes the fluid level to drop in the reservoir. If you don't have much of it in your reservoir, then air gets in the system.
Finally you mount the sprocket's cover with the slave on the engine and the rod pushes back the slave's piston and the fluid returns in the reservoir back on it's original level. However the air doesn't get out because the master cylinder is parallel to the clip on which gives it a tilted angle which become greater as the bike rests on it's side stand.
That way the air get's trapped in the master cylinder.

I never had that problem since I use a locking pair of pliers to hold the slave's piston in place once I have removed it but it is the only explanation I can think of for this issue.

That adds up Makis, because I remember I had to bleed the banjo bolt at the master as well as the housing.

Thanks everyone for the info on bleeding the hydraulics. Worked like a charm. The oil was SOOOOOOOOOOOOO cloudy. Cleaned it all out, flushed out all the old oil and filled it with new.

Thanks again. This site is a great resource.

And I guess I will have to look up badandy and jondog9.

I am down in the Santa Cruz area, and commute through the mountains into Campbell three times a week on freshly paved twisties! )
