Whilest cleaning

Hey all. I have an 02 that I bought new. About 2 years ago I removed the tank to replace the fuel filter... I just ended up not riding it for that time. Life got busy. In the meantime mice decided to use it as a habitrail. Thankfully they didn't chew anything. I pretty much disassembled the bike and cleaned it.
Anyhow I removed the pair valve block off and found it was rusty. So I decided to finish gutting the snorkel and removed and patch the pair area. See pics. I'm not necessarily doing these mods because I'm looking for more hp, I just wanted to clean things up while I had it apart. I do have some questions as to what the little container and hollow area is inside the air box is for? Sound resonance? back pressure? I want to get rid of unnecessary stuff. Is it OK to smooth out the riffles in the air box opening and toss that hunk of rubber that defects air flow? It looks like the riffles might be to mitigate moisture. I also understand that the rubber air deflector acts as a seal for the airbos as well,I just want to clean up the airflow... I'm no engineer though.

Theses are the areas in the Airbox I was wondering about. The rubber doesn't seal up properly anyways. I when I'm ready to assemble it, I will probably use some rtv gasket sealer on it.

There have been a few posts over the years about modifying the OEM airbox on here and speedzillla. I also cut all of that out of my OEM airbox and everything seems to be working fine. Use the search and read about what others did.

Thanks for the reply. I researched and read all kinds of stuff on airbox mods... from all the after market stuff to people moding the stock and adding their own filter.... like I said, I'm no Honda engineer. Before I go cutting stuff out of the airbox, I would like to know what it is. I've seen the same question asked in a forum but it was not answered. I don't go to the track.. I'm not looking for extra cheap hp. My goal is purely for aesthetics. I currently have the Sato carbon banzai hi mounts, PC3r ,ohlins all around, yoyodyne slipper and other things complements of Kyle Racing. So you see I have no problem spending cash, I just was wondering is all. I love the signature sound of the intake. I've read during researching that modding the airbox will increase the sound. What I'm worried about mainly is the square doohickey and the expansion looking area in the box. I get that those things a gone when using an aftermarket box, but they are there for a reason and I was curious if anyone knew. Ty!

If you take the rubber off of the top of the airbox lid you get a nice intake snarl.

I took off the rubbers an put them away.
We all know how hot the rc gets, so I covered the airbox with hvac tape to help keep the air cooler.. don't know if it helps or not, but I thought there might be some logic to it. Maybe I should make a taint strip too for those extra hot summer days.

The front of the airbox that has what you call the "Riffles" are venturi that are designed to slow down the in-rush of air coming through the ram, or snorkel. When riding, the air entering in the ram is getting compressed which increases the air velocity. The venturi are there to break up the flow of air so it can enter the airbox more efficiently. Engineers use computer and real world models to fine tune these variable so the CFM is right where they need it to feed air to the motor.

High speed air flow work very much like high speed water flow. Imagine water shooting into the ram on the front of the bike. When the water hits the venturi, its momentum is changed and allows it to more efficiently enter the air box. Remove the venturi and the water would shoot past the openings of the airbox. This, in turn, would create a low pressure effect inside the air box that would pull air (or water, in this case) out.

I used to work on an engineering team that analyzed air flow in data centers to make them cool more efficiently. I just did the data gathering while the real mechanical engineers did the compute models but I got to use math. It was a fun job while it lasted.

Awsome, that's an answer I was looking for. I don't want to do something detrimental. I ported and polished my fair share of 50cc ,70cc type of bikes with success. My ignorance on the matter made me think that the principles are the same. Thanks to you I will research and learn how airbox really works even for the sake of knowing. I have the bike all apart and want to do the little things while it is apart. Thanks again.
