Wibbly,

Assuming that a bike is properly maintained and consistently starts as it should, is there some normal interval when this may start to be a problem? After 10k, 20k, 30k miles? Are there any early indications that it may have begun before the starter motor shows a significant loss of torque? Is there a way to test for it before removing and disassembling the starter?

Miles don't indicate starts. So not really? I had to fix a friend's bike with about 50k kms on it. Had a lot of buildup in the end cap.

As a maintenance item it's not a bad plan to check it every few years.

Garage
My 1986 VF500F2 had trouble starting....

It will literally fall apart at the end

The brushes on the 1982 VF400F I picked up last week are still A-OK

It's interesting that the brushes on the '86 failed before those on the '82. Have the two bikes seen different amounts of use?
