Gas mileage?

Okay, soI ran out of gas for the first time ever about a month ago and have since been monitiring the mileage per tank before the light comes on. My last tank got me 111 miles before the light. The tank before that was 114. before that was 110.

Is this par for the course with these big twins? My K5 GSXR 1000 regularly got 35 mpg. I am afraid I am running the bike really rich.

Also, when the fuel light comes on, it comes on solid. It never has a flashing mode. Is this normal or do I possibly have a bad sensor or relay or what have you?

As always, thanks in advance for any info you might have.

I get something like 90mi to a tank around town and riding hard.....about 120mi on the highway on long trips.

The 51 is a fuel hog.

The FI light will only flash if it is tripping a trouble code. Yours is normal. When that light comes on you better get your ass to a gas station!

The RC51 and most twins aren't known for being fuel thrifty.
If you baby it, you might get into the upper 30's or lower 40's.
If you open the throttles up, you can get into the 20's real easy.

The most I've ever gotten out of my '02 is 140 miles to a tank.
And the low fuel light was on for the last 12 miles then.
On average I get around 120-130 unless I'm really zipping along.
Then I can get 90 miles to a tank.

And it's not only the RC51. My buddy with his Aprilia Tuono is the same way.
And Ducati's aren't much better. And some models only have a 3.5 gal tank.
Those never stray far from a gas station.

Sounds about normal. Mine normally comes on between 110-120. Days of hard riding will make it come on closer to 100. Average around 30 mpg normally. Have gotten as high as 35 and as low as 25. Previous owner said the light normally came on for him around 140. But the rear tire (Pilot Power) was completely flat in the center after 2000 miles and had jumbo chicken strips. I mean at least 1.5 inches of virgin rubber. It was like falling over in the turns. So I think he was a "cruiser" which would explain the mileage he was getting. But, yes, these are some thirsty bikes. My Hurricane 600 only gets in the mid to high 30s and my Kawi LTD 700 gets around 40. I think it's a fair trade for the power and fun. My buddy's '06 ZX-10 gets about the same mileage as my RC.

Thanks for the info everybody. I appreciate it.

Sceamin Chief, yeah I got a good map from a guy named Joel on here. It really improved the midrange. I think it's fantastic. I am going to get a custom tune from a well reputed local guy who is about half the cost of the big dyno guys, once I have the money. But for now, I am very happy.

In comparison, my '08 FZ1 only gets around 120-130 miles to a tank.
So it's not a whole lot better.
However, my '06 'Busa gets about 155 miles per tank at 98 MPH average.
I love my RC51, but my 'Busa still amazes me at times.
