2001 build by a beginner

Well I got this bike in a trade and didn't really know what I was getting myself into being very unfamiliar with the rc51. Once I got it home and did some more research and found this site I realized I have my work cut out for me.

I'm no mechanic but I grew up in my dad's garage working on race cars when I wasn't out chasing girls so I figured I'd give it a shot.

This bike has many issues and I plan on fixing most of them just to get it on the road and see if she's worth keeping around. My last bike was an 06 sv1000s but it's been a few years since I let her go.

List of problems found so far

Oil leak ( found a bad o ring on the oil cooler line. Hoping that was it)
Oil pressure light not working ( after some work I found the wire isn't connected to anything)
Mess of wires everywhere.
Unknown last service
Radiator fan comes on with the ignition
Tons of missing bolts and brackets
Custom tailight from a tl1000s. I might keep it though.
Left radiator from an sp2
Broken left headlight
Broken mirror
Miss matched lever
Bent vortex rear set
Lots of cuts and bruises. She's been down a time or two.

So far I've .....
Cleaned up the tail wiring
Pair and flapper mods
Installed new headlight
Changed plugs
Cleaned throttle bodies

I'm still trying to figure out what's going on but I'm into my service manual daily. She ran and rode when I tore her down. It's a bit of a challenge for me but I have faith I can get it done.

You're right there, I think.

You can spray paint the instrument cluster, but the glass look over each LED won't come back. This bike's lived exposed to the sun much of her life, it seems.
Wiring a mess is because of the undertail that has been fitted with the tail light conversion and not having the original underseat's tabs to secure each relay, wiring, etc. Remove the tail and tidy it up. If there's poorly done wiring, re-do it using the best crimp connections you can find. Also if there's excessive wiring, shorten it & solder any wires that need it or had already been poorly spliced together, coating each in heat wrap. - this will help return reliability in the wiring and may help you find what's at fault with it now.

Most wiring is color coded, so not too difficult to follow and see where there's a break, etc. Poor electrical connections & installation often seem to lead to problems on these bikes, possibly because there's also a lot of vibration being a big V Twin.

Good luck with your project.

Thank you for the advice. I'm going to be patient, take my time and do it right.

Can anyone tell me if there is anything I should be looking for or replacing now that the bike is this far apart? Any input is appreciated.
