StrayCat's SP1 ressurection

Hi Guy's thought I'd start a thread as I prepare to start a mild restoration of my 2000 Sp1 (#27).

I got the bike in January. PO had only had it for a short time (few months) and the bike had been low sided by the Original Owner.

Now its in my collection and it will get refreshed. It runs well but is cosmetically challenged after the low side, its got a coolant leak from somewhere near the thermostat and the PO informed me that when he rode it (only once) he found that it tended to understeer especially in right hand turns.

PO had also already purchased a new magnesium clutch cover, decals and other things. Bike came with the majority of the original parts as well (Rear fender, pipes, levers, Seat, windshield etc)

here is the treatment plan :

-Strip to the frame (may or may not take the engine out - we will see) for deep cleaning
-New Steering Head bearings
-Rebuild front forks with new bushings, O - rings and seals (will check them for strangeness too)
-Wheel Bearings
-New Tires & repair to front rim scuff. (ensure its not warped either)
-New Brake Pads & Calliper service
-New Wiring harness & connectors, the original owner did some major chopping of the harness for a tidy tail and LED lights
-Repair and Repaint the damaged panels and Decals
-All new Genuine Honda OEM fasteners and screws
-New Rear Shock (maybe with 5mm shim added)
-New bar grips and bar end weights
-Fix the coolant leak - may require a new hose or two
-Replace the right side radiator (crushed fins)
-Replace right side mirror
-Install all the original parts, which came with it (Pipes, Rear Fender, levers, seat, signal lights, windshield etc)
-All fluids (oil, coolant, brake fluid) and filter changes
-Check valve clearances and make adjustments as needed

So far all the new parts have arrived and I have started to repair the bodywork. As luck would have it the lower fairing was mainly decal damage and after removing the decals the actual damage to the plastics is very minimal. The main damage was the upper fairing, there was a couple of cracks 4" and 2" which I repaired with plastic welding and Plastex before some surface filler. Tail section has a scuff and a crack (plastex repair) and will need paint as well.

I won't get a big start on it for a few weeks Im just wrapping up my Ducati 748 refresh first.

LOL, thanks Nigel. Judging by your avatar your SP2 arrived. I kept the pics of that that you sent. We didn't get the white and silver ones over here and they are my favourites. How does she ride ?

I finally finished my Ducati 748 yesterday (needed a bit more work and parts than I originally thought) so I can get to the SP1 now with a more time devoted to it.

Like most here will agree, bloody brilliant! Different ball game to the inline fours I'm more used to, but had to get one of these after having just a 'basic' Firestorm/SuperHawk.

Some might say they're heavy to turn, but as a heavier person, I find it much more comfortable and useable than the 'twitchy' minute 2018 Fireblade. Each to their own of course, but I believe every Honda enthusiast should have one of these - or the SP-1. Brilliant machine.

Good to see the Ducati up and running. Time to sell it and get yourself on the 2020 (labelled as 2021 for USA) RR-R SP, specially detuned for the American/Canadian market. Gee, you guys get shafted. You get no base model and power cut back to 186 bhp as opposed to our 214, and your revs are cut to 12,000 as opposed to our 14,500. Is this only Honda, or are R1Ms and other top line bikes similarly nobbled?

Yea, I keep saying im gonna sell some stuff, but I just keep buying. My Firestorm and my Hawk GT will get sold this spring and maybe the FJ09 and the Ducati. Still hankering for a CB1000R and an Africa twin and a M109 and a Rossi R1 and ...and....and...and, im hopeless,

Many of our insurance companies (mine included) won't touch the hyper sports bikes, and when they do, they charge insane policy rates. It will likely be close to $30,000 CAD for a RR-R SP, to my retiree spending allowance won't allow for that.

as far as the power cuts, not heard of that but im not surprised, you guys get so much more than we get here. Maybe Honda thinks Canadians cant ride. LOL

Just for those who aren't up with this, or don't even care, here's pics of USA Honda information and UK copied from my own brochure. I accept California has different laws (perhaps only emission related)but this impacts on the whole USA/Canada imports:

Wee bit of progress. Bodywork is all repaired, just needs wet sanding now. Also pulled off the wheels and found the front is dented and gouged. that will go in for repair tomorrow.
