Do I need this?

Not really sure what it's called. The lower cowl piece that fit between the 2 side lower cowls right behind the forks? The parts diagram has it as 64560-MCF-D30ZA COWL (LOWER).........Mine is just flopping around in there with some mounting tabs broken. Does it serve a purpose?

If it is the black v shaped part, yes you need it. This protects your oil cooler from rocks and debris and screwing up your pretty engine

That doesn't make sense, there is a hole cut in it for the oil cooler to get air and the oil cooler has a grill on it to protect it. My Speed Triple oil cooler sits right behind the front wheel.

Is there any other reason it could be needed?

Mine didn't have it when I bought it, I did replace it though. My thoughts are if Honda put it there, it's there for a reason.

Mine has a cut out in the lower where a plastic screen is mounted in to allow air in.

These little touches are where Honda's fit and finish are better than other makers. IMO

The lower mounting tabs on my shitty plastics are broken off so Id have to fix that or get new plastics to mount mine properly. Does this piece help with channeling air for cooling or anything?

I am sure that it does as it is curved in the direction of the radiators. As mentioned before; if Honda put it on there it serves a purpose. Probably helps with aerodynamics as well

So besides Honda's infinite wisdom that it "must be useful" is there any real world experience of people not having it installed?

Sounds like you'd be the first one. Common sense tells me it should be on the bike and probably everyone else feels the same. One way to find out. Take it off
