New member with gearing question.

Hello. Just picked up my 2003 RC51 Wednesday and I hate the stock gearing for this area as there is little chance to stretch the bikes legs. Without going too radical, what are some common gearings folks are running? The bike has a PCIIIr with a full Yoshimura system and K&N filter. Pazzo levers and heated grips as well. Never had heated grips before. Nice!
Here's a shot of the bike:

I'll be running 15/42 (-1, +2) this season, whenever it will start. At least the snow is gone.

I'm running 15/41, but I'm going to try 15/42 at Barber next month.

Im buying the sprockets next week and cant decide which combo to go with (15.41 vs 15.42). Does anyone know what RPMs the bike pulls in 6th at 60mph with each setup?

According to my gearing calculator:
Basing my tire diameters on a 190/50 Conti-RaceAttack at 24.75", and a 190/55 Dunlop SportMax Q2 at 25.3".

15/41 in 6th gear:
With 190/50:
9000 RPM = 148 MPH
10000 RPM = 165 MPH

With 190/55:
9000 = 152
10000 = 168
-----------
Using 15/42:
With 190/50:
9000 RPM = 145 MPH
10000 RPM = 164 MPH

With 190/55:
9000 RPM = 148 MPH
10000 RPM = 164 MPH

Thanks Subsailor, seems like your the guru around here. I have read a crapload of your posts. All very helpful. I think I may be going with the 15.42 since it really doesnt make that much of a diff in RPM.

The reason most go with 15/41 is that it doesn't require any chain length modifications.
But 15/41 or 15/42 should be fine.
If you have a lot hills or corners, the 15/42 will allow the engine to run more into the power range and drive off the corners a little better.

Hey Courier, sorry if I hijacked your post. My chain is at the end of its life and I will be replacing it shortly anyway. If I dont replace it with the sprockets I bet it will fit on the chain I have now since its stretched out a bit. I ride a lot of roads in the country with a lot of turns, hills, and occasional straights.

I picked up mine with a 15/42 and a few months ago swithed to a 43 in the rear and i love it. I don't mind shifting like crazy and i dont miss that tiny lag in first gear off the line either anymore!
