thinking of switching to 15/42 520 chain with 190/55 tire..

Hey guys! Been awhile since ive had time to do anything with riding or anything.life happens! Anyways its seems time to change out my chain and spockets. Im going with a 520 chain and thinking maybe 15/42 sprocket combo. Seems like a nice match.but is there really that much of a difference from a 15/41? Also I 190/50 on my tire right now. Wanted to change that to 190/55. Thought it might help the bike fall into the corners a little easier. Hopefully this will get a nice change in the way the bike rides. Is there anything I need to take into consideration while doing these mods? Any feedback is much appreciated thanks!

I'm 15/42 520 speedohealed with a 180/55 and Im loving it. Cruising at 80mph, im at ~5k rpm. I've never had 15/41 so I can't tell u if theres a difference or not. I have an sp2 with 106links and the fitment is great. With the 190/55, u just have to make sure your chain is at least 108links for sp2 or 106 for sp1 (if I'm remembering correctly).

SP2, 15/41, 190/55, OEM length chain, 520. Here.

I love the 55 over the 50, turn in is a lot smoother and more tire available at steeper lean angles.

The 41 over the 42, I say anything about other than what I've read. "42 optimal for the track" "41 more for the street" but either way it's a lot better than the OEM 16/40.

This has already been covered, search for it for more information.

For me, instead of saying the 42 is better track and 41 better street......in a slightly different but similar nuance, the 42 will be a little less ideal on highway and tour mode, but there will be better acceleration which suits zoomin around town and such. The RC51 is a heavy bike which gearing helps to overcome. And if you like a bit of hooligan ability a 42 or even 43 helps.

It primarily comes down to personal preference. I have a 15/42 on a 190/50 that came with the bike. And I ride around town mostly. And I like the gearing for the type of riding I do. When I need a new tire I'll go with 190/55 and consider changing to a 43 rear because the added tire height will cause me to lose some rear gearing.

I haven't done a chain in forever, but I remember it as 10X link length chain for the RC51, not 200+.

Holy crap, you must be running quite the stretched swingarm with 206 links ;-)

Im running 520 with 15/42 and 106 links on my street SP1 with SP2 swingarm, and its great :-D

You may need to add an extra link to your chain over stock.
That's exactly what I needed to do to make that tire and sprocket combo work.
I tried a 41, but found the speed to gear ratios were more friendly with the 42 for my region and the way I ride.

Thanks for the scoop James! This topic seems to come up a lot myself included, I'm happy that you and the members are here to steer us newb's in the right direction Speaking of which, where would be the best place/site to purchase the 520 15/42 set up? I was looking on partzilla and amazon, but with your knowledge, what would you recommend?

I just Googled a DID chain and Renthal sprockets, and went for the cheapest site.
DID Zvm-x chain is very good and so are the Renthal Hard anodized rear and ultra light front sprockets :-)
