'03 Fan(s) noise

Just finished going over new to me '03 model with 7K miles. First real ride today of any distance. Caught in typical city traffic and fans cycled on; they are not as noisy as a Triumph Speed Triple, but loud enough. Not a squeeling bearing sound, but a high pitch, siren sound. Is this normal? As I said not a metallic sound, but louder than my VFR800. What do you riders think?

Shut the engine down and reach through the front and spin each fan with your finger tip.
It should spin freely with no squeaks.
If it has squeaks, or doesn't spin at all, the bearings are either going or gone.
You'll need to order a fan motor (or two).
You'll have to drain and pull the radiator(s) to unbolt the fan from each radiator.
Otherwise the motor replacement is easy.
One nut holds the fan onto the motor.
I replaced both of mine as the right one was squeaking when spun.

The only other possibility (and this is remote) is that the fan can be intermittently touching the radiator. When the RC51 goes down, rads can be damaged/tweaked very quickly and if they are shifted, can rub on the rad.
But I'm guessing SubSailor is on the right path here...

Since he says it's high high pitched sound, I'm leaning more towards the fan rubbing on the radiator fins as you say.

Sure appreciate you riders input, so I figured the least I could do is follow up and let you know what I found. I reached in and could spin the fan with absolutely no squeal/rough spots, etc. Started the bike and ran until the fans started and sure enough I had the high pitch whine on the right side. Bottom line, a wire bundle was laying on the black part of the fan shroud and making the high pitch noise. Tie rapped it up out of the way and all is good. BTW, I had to put my propane heater on the right side radiator to get it hot enough to activate the fans. Honda certainly has a good cooling system on this model. Thanks again for the tips.

Down here in the South; we got a saying---even a blind hog finds an acorn every now and then. That was my good luck for the week. Funny thing I had 2 m/c mechanics after listening swear it was the bearing. Have to admit I thought it was too.
