Ticking

Well i just got my bike out of the shop. I had Racers Edge here in Las Vegas give the bike a look over. i had brake fluid flushed, front brakes, front fork seals, spark plugs and had them check in to my valve adjustment. After talking with the tech for about 45mins he said i have a awesome bike and that i really take good care of it and that its a HONDA your going to get a lot of miles out of it. Anyways i explained my concern about the ticking noise coming from the engine after the bike warms up and has been ridin for a few miles. He said i have nothing to worry about that rc51's make lots of noise. My worry about it is this noise was never here before and is new. He also stated that i should switch fuel because i should not be running Trick racing fuel 100 octane and go back to what the factory recommends. Reason for my posting is to see if anyone has ever had this kind of problem with there RC51. I know that a exhaust leak can make a ticking sound also im just not sure if its exhaust or the engine or is this something normal that most RC51's have happen around the 26k mark. Any and all feedback is welcome thanks

One member's engine developed a quite loud ticking in his engines top end.
He found the cam bearing journals had been destroyed somehow.

If the ticking is loud, I'd pull the valve covers and inspect.
They do may some ticking as the valves actuate, although it's hard to tell with the exhaust noise and cam whine.

Since your bike just got out of the shop, one would "assume" the valve clearances were checked and shims replaced if needed. So this ticking is a bit of a mystery.

Yes they checked valve clearance and they told me it's good. I just don't want to destroy my engine

If they checked the valve clearance, and you've got a receipt that states it, you should be good if there's an issue. Simply take it back if there's a problem and ask it be fixed since the first job wasn't done right.

The RC51 is a noisy bike to begin with. It whines like piss and the valves and injectors click. You can pop the journals to have them inspected too. Try to localize the sound. If the journals are good, it might just be a case where you noticed something that's been there for a while.

I have a ticking too, 03, 11,4xx miles, I've had the bike sense 3,500miles, mobile 1 4t ever 3000.
I only can hear it about 3500-4500rpm, from what I can remember it started about 2000-3000 miles ago, free mods and slip on, running 93 pump gas and reading the cam bearing thread made the ticking loader too. I'm hoping to have the free time this weekend to pull the valve cover off. I'll post my findings.

Anything I should be looking for?

Easiest thing would be sccring on the journal or cam, similiar to what a spun rod bearing looks like. Run your fingernail over the suspected journal/cam with some oil lubricating it. If your nail catches, then it's a sign the journal/cam has an issue. Some discoloration is normal, but any scoring, aside from a normal cam oil relief in the journal, is an issue.

I started with the ez'est thing first, I'm thinking it was just an exhaust leak. I tightend the nuts about a half of turn each with the trusty 1/4" ratchet. Not over tight just snug, I've put on about 200 mile on the ol girl sense then, I don't hear the ticking any more.

i was starting to get paranoid about this as well seeing as how im gearing up for a 4500 mile ride soon
tried asking once before and i looked through the repair manual and
couldnt find any info on recommended maintenance like valve checks and so on
at certain mileage increments do you know
when they say to have some of these things checked

ive seen so many people ask about the many noises this bike makes
and the more i think about it i keep hearing more or things getting louder
i think the only way to really clarify this is a video taken right under the
windscreen while riding anyone by chance have one?
i know its a stretch but bear with me here
