cant shift into first

so all of a sudden i come to a light and i cant shift into first gear! this happened in one day. i had trouble a couple times today but only today that it was tough but i still got it there. now not at all. it just wont get past N. all other gears are fine. even with the bike not running i couldnt do it by hand either. my clutch feels tight and normal but i know the clutch fluid is dark and could use a change. is that all there is to it? thanks!

What does the shift lever feel like when you try to shift to 1st?
Does it actually depress or does it not move?
And does it do this even if the bike is rocked back and forth to rotate the gears?

If you can't get it in with the engine stopped, moving the bike back & fourth then you might have a gearbox problem. Has the bike been used for power wheelies, or anything like that?

Did you have the bike jump out of 1st occasionally while riding?
If so, then it is more likely a bent fork.

I figure it's either a bent fork, some problem with the shift mechanism or linkage, or some obstruction on the drum preventing movement of the fork along the groove.
It's not that complicated of a mechanical system.

In post #3 he mentioned that the shifter won't even move towards 1st gear, yet all other gears work fine.

Also it's reported that it didn't jump out of 1st when it was working for a while.
It almost sounds like a form of obstruction preventing the drum from rotating towards 1st engagement.

I guess it could be the return spring, but engagement of the other gears works fine reportedly.

In the end, it's just going to require some inspection to isolate the problem.
It will be interesting on what the fault is.
