Oil change / oil level question

When I picked up my RC it had a fresh oil change, so I haven't performed one yet to know the answer to my question...

When I started the bike up yesterday and let it idle, I thought I smelled a faint odor of burning oil. (this was the first time I've smelled anything other than warm engine and or exhaust) I see no drips on the floor nor do I ever see any smoke on start up or a rev of the engine. This morning I stood the bike straight (not on a stand) and the oil came midway up the sight glass, between the two lines. When it is on the kickstand, there is no oil in the sight glass. When I got to work, I again checked the oil with the bike running and it was almost to the same point in the sight glass. I want to make sure that I either should be looking for a leak, burning oil, or not to worry at all.

The question;
The manual calls for like 4.1 quarts with filter change. What does the oil level look like if you only put one gallon in it?

Thanks

the RC takes 4.1 US QT. NOT gallons!!

1 US QT will definately not show up in the sight glass.

I usually buy 1 galon of Rotella T6 and use the whole thing. It actually goes above the sight glass but everything is fine.

Crap, nice catch, I'll fix that. And what do you mean by goes above the sight glass? there are min and max lines on the sight glass. Does it make it to the min line? or does it completely fill the glass? (after you start the bike to fill the filter)

What filter did you use?
There's two different lengts available for our bikes, that I know of.
The Mobile M1-110 and the M1-108.
the 108 is the same length as the OEM black filter.

I use the longer 110 and I put exactly 4 qts. in. That puts my oil level at the top line, still a tiny bit of room left at the top of the window.
Checked after a 5 minute warmup, and a 2 minute cool off.
My little routine before a weekend rode: I usually start the bike, shut it off, check tire pressure, then check oil level.

I did mine myself recently, changed filter too, and one 4 qt jug filled the oil to the top or maybe just above the sight window.

If you want to feel better, lean the bike on its kickstand ... or start it! Sucks the oil up throughout the engine and doesn't fill the window anymore

I just figure, since I let my old oil drip out over an entire night ... and if the Honda manual says it needs 4.1 qts and I put in only 4.0 qts, even if it appears to be too high in the window, it should be good.

Crap, that may mean that I am using oil. I'll have to pay close attention to the level every day now. Will probably do an oil change very soon as well, even though there is new oil in there, just so I have a point of reference.

I'm assuming you get the 5w-40 since the T-6 is the synthetic oil?

Yes, I bought 4 jugs of it over the winter for $12 per jug. Great deal. Takes care of oil changes for this year and maybe some of next year.

I use the Mobile 1 110 filter. I think it's the larger one.

$12??? Holy crap. I've never seen it cheaper than $20 here at my local Walmart. Costs even more at Autozone. I think right now it is $22 at Walmart here.
