Laguna Seca, first track day

Better late than never...did my very first track day this past Friday at Laguna Seca. Took the RC51, and it was a blast just to be on this track with a bike after coming here as a spectator so many times.

I don't think I ever really figured out the slower corners, turn 2 in particular remains a mystery. The corkscrew elevator drop was great fun although I didn't get through there particularly quickly either. But the 3-4-5-6 combo felt really good, and my favorite was 9-10, looked forward to it every lap. Hit an indicated 137 going into turn 1, the hairiest corner on the track, as I'm thinking, "OMG here comes turn 2!"

Except for gearing and levers my SP-2 is stock. Didn't crash, but got waaay sideways coming out of 11 once--no TC back in 2003. The RC ran like a top, must have been the HRC stickers.

Keigwins ran a great program.

Nice!

2007 was my first year there to watch MotoGP. Stoner won that year. Been some EPIC races on that track, watching MM93 dice thru the dirt to pass VR46 in the corkscrew was a moment in GP history, an ironic one at that.
I digress...
I've only ridden bitch in a Shelby GT500 at Leguna Seca. I only dream of actually getting my RC51 on that track...

No noise issues with your stock pipes?

I LOVE Laguna!! My favorite track to ride!
Turn 1: is fun, aim for left of the bridge and hold on as you drift out to the right over the hump. Once you find a good brake marker, just hit it every time!

Turn 2 isn't tricky, but it does tack some balls to ride fast. There's two schools of thought on it, to double apex it, or just ride it tight. It depends on how much corner speed you feel comfortable carrying as to which will work better for you.

3-4 is just flat, stay out of the marbles/dirt and have fun!

5, hit the apex down low by the curb and you can almost take it flat out!

6 is similar, don't take it wide, or the off camber part will catch you out and put you in the dirt!
7, straight line it.

8&8A, pick a reference point and just hit it! It's a blast that once you figure out is fun as hell!!

Turn 9, roll on it, stay tight and fly!

Turn 10, looks like you can't go fast, but the camber at the apex is steep, you can fly through it if you suspension is set up right, but it will almost fully compress, carefully not to "gray out"!

Turn 11, hard on the brakes, aim to just miss the end of the pit wall and get in the gas as hard as possible as you drift out to the edge!!

Nice write up. I love how you explain each turn in detail and how fast it is, but your knee pucks are completely virgin

Thanks a$$ lol

I'll admit that the pics with the red number plate I was tip-toeing, brand new leathers and I'd just put a a fresh set Michelin Power Race tires on at the track and they were slippery as "F"! When I came in after 10 laps because they were still riding like crap(and a BF for exceeding the DB limit), I discovered the guys that put them on had waaaay over inflated them. So, I lowered the tire pressure in both and like the heavens opened up, they worked awesome.

Green number plate pics show non-virgin puck action.

Btw, turn 2 can induce serious pucker factor if you double apex it, and on the second apex you drag toe, peg, and shift lever.... I may be speaking from experience...

If you are dragging hard parts like the shifter then either your suspension is not set correctly for your weight or you are not getting off the bike far enough (or both) and that is definitely speaking from experience.

Fortunately it was a one time thing, and a combination of both things you mentioned, but quickly rectified with a trip into the RaceTech pit at the track and a swift kick in my a$$ to not be lazy....

Since we have threadjacked the piss outta this thread I'll throw some in too

I personally think Laguna is way overhyped as a racetrack, but at the same time everyone should experience it at least once...

On the fence about that, but hell, I grew up racing at Willow Springs, so Laguna is just fun for me.

Hey, is that Steve creeping up on you there?
