Project DIY 1 - CF-plate - RC51 SP1 / SP2

Hi,

During the last weeks, I spend some time to think about more detailed weight savings. Prio 1 was not to invest other thousands of Euros/Dollars, but to find details, nobody touched yet (maybe).

Maybe you think: “If I want to save more weight, I will spend some time on the toilet before I ride!” Please ignore this thread. Thx.

After spending some time to cut the sprocket cover (saving 82g, see below > it´s not the „Nicky-Mod“ ), the existing plate behind (made of steel) was not acceptable. A special friend of mine invested a lot of time to re-design it professionally and I found a company, producing the part in a new way.

I made some rapid prototypes and selected top-not industrial, high-strength Prepreg-Carbon to rebuild it. After receiving the first real sample (it´s absolutely amazing how true to size it is), the scale showed 16gr (instead of 78gr OEM).

Maybe you still think: “If I want to save more weight, I will spend some time twice on the toilet before I ride!” Please ignore this thread finally. Thx again.

Only with cutting one and replacing another part (the CF-plate), you can save approx. 140 gr total. On the first side, the mod is an optical highlight on the other side, it saves more relevant grams to reach the superior target (at least mine ).

You need no to be frightened: If a chain cracks, it will compensate the first impact and it will – hopefully – save the motor as well as clutch cylinder. Thorsten (Durbahn) abdicated this part completely with his CCC.

The installation is very simple:

1.) Loosen the four relevant screws (see below). Be careful with the clutch cylinder.
2.) Clean everything carefully.

3.) Mount the CF-plate instead of the OEM part (place the bushings in the relevant positions before).
4.) Mount a new seal 11344-MCF-000.

5.) Mount the sprocket cover according to the manual.
6.) Check everything finally.

There is enough space everywhere, because the CF-plate is placed axial among the chain links. I mounted a 16T 520 Renthal UL sprocket. Absolutely unproblematic – elsewise I won´t mount it!

The first batch (10 plates) was completely sold to the German board (and one French guy).
If there is enough demand, I can organize another production. If have to call 29€ (~ 37$) plus delivery plus paypal (if wished).

If you are not interested, I hope I was able to show you my project-approach a bit.

Cheers,
Tobi

P.S.: I will not send the drawing etc. – Sorry!
