Superhawk radiators used on RC51?

I have had some trouble finding radiators in decent shape for my 2000 RC51. New are about as much as I paid for the bike and used seem to always have leaks. I had an idea of used aftermarket superhawk radiators which are much less expensive. The only draw back are that they are smaller. I was wondering if anyone has ever heard of this being done before? Thanks for the help.

Anything is possible, but the cooling system on the RC is the last place I would be fixing things on the cheap. There was a guy over in speedzilla selling a left side for like $120? Not sure if that is what you would call expensive or not.

Keep an eye on the forums and you can find them for good prices. Especially since tyga usa has released their front mounts at a very good price.

I'm going with Madbuyer.....just give in and do some front mounts.

I'd be worried about the smaller Rads off the superhawk....the RC already has poor cooling because of the side mounts....downgrading the size will probably cause them not to properly align with the vents on the side of the fairings and could possibly allow less air flow around the rads. You may see some higher running temps.

You must be careful as each radiator was designed to disperse / remove so many BTUs of heat away/out from the coolant. I learned this from HVAC design with a heater core, which is similar. Some of the "lines" have different thickness and therefore more ports in them. (Like some automotive applications take 13 port for L4 engines and V6 engines use 17 port...you get into the physics then...)

It comes down to area and by reducing your cooling area, this may cause a failure.

If you look at the front mounts, they add cooling area which in effect cools the engine more efficiently.

I see a lot of folks offering up information and opinion to stay away from the smaller radiators....its probably good advise from folks who have owned and know these bikes well. From the casual rider to the most agressive racing foks on here, we all agree...the RC lacks efficient cooling in the stock form.

haha yep. I was offered some Furick HRC replica's. If that falls through i'm doing the Thermaes from Tyga once they are back in stock.

Glad you have taken this direction, I read this thread earlier and was going to post pictures of the Superhawk rads, and the RC-51 rads for your comparison.. Being that i have both bikes and spare parts..
Sad that the spares are for a SP-2
