SP1/SP2 exhaust header switch

I know it's been beaten to death here but..I've read as much as I could find about sp2 headers onto an sp1, which I've done. Some say just bolt them on , while others say file or grind the "D" shaped pipe to match the round exhaust port. I didnt, just bolted them on and now with a set of Yosh rs3's on down low it's really um, fluffy for lack of a better word. Lags behind throttle position until more rpms and then surges to match what I'm doing with the twist grip. Seems like a likely culprit, the exhaust having trouble getting out at low rev's. But (!) I ran the sp2 headers with sp1 stock mufflers and it was ok... maybe the rs3's are too free flowing ?
2001 with k&n intake and a PC3r. Flapper delete. 80,000km but runs perfect and strong otherwise
Thanks in advance
