Bosch wide and O2 sensor question

Ok folks I have a question for you. Does the Bosch connecting plug on their wide and O2 sensor have anything to do with its operation or does it just connect wires together? So I'm running the Motty closed loop FI auto tune system (they have since gone out of business but a few years back they were the only guys making a closed loop FI auto tune where you can tune each cylinder individually for a reasonable price I.e. A poor mans Motec) the down side was it was not really a plug and play system and splicing into the wiring harness was required. Fast forward a few years, it's been working great with no issues but the wiring harness is a bit of a mess. So I'm trying to clean it up a bit. The wiring from the wide and O2 sensor for the rear cylinder is way too long. My thought is to cut the plug off of the O2 sensor and direct wire it to the FI module essentially deleting the below picture. But I want to make sure the Bosch plug does not have anything to do with the operation of the sensor.

No it's just a connector.

You could buy the matching connector and adjust the harness on your bike to plug into the Bosch o2. At least that way the sensor can be removed without twisting up the harness or replaced easily should it require replacement.
