Poll: How Do You Feel About Loud Pipes?

Quote:
'Loud pipes save lives' and 'the louder it is the faster it is' are all phrases you’ve probably heard before, but for a lot of people – particularly the non-riding public – loud exhausts prove to be obnoxious. Which camp do you find yourself in?

"The louder it is the faster it is" doesn´t apply especially for a Harley or some japanese custom bikes. The problem lies in their weird ignition pattern. Open exhausts with these bikes sounds horrible imo. For me a good exhaust sound should be deep and even, Ducati, RC51, Yamaha TRX 850 are good examples. It doesn´t have to be loud just a deep bassy even sound that also warnes other traffic about your precense. As for an in-line four cylinder sports bike, the sound of a 4 to 1 race system can be very annoying even to me.

I'm pretty torn on the subject... If I could get all the horsepower & linear power delivery that my full race system delivers with an exhaust that was 100% silent I would be perfectly ok with that. I simply don't need the auditory stimulus to enjoy the way my bike performs, but I would not want to give up the performance just to have a quieter bike.

That being said, I would GLADLY run the stock exhaust on my streetbikes for the rest of my life if every single Hardly-Ableson rider had to do the exact same!

Well said "LDH"! In general the loudness level is not the real problem but the character of the sound (and loudness combined) and I can understand that. For example a yelling Yamaha R6 on high revs through a residential area late at night can be a bit annoying. A Harley with open pipes would create a stirr also. So imho the best way to at least come to an agreed compromise is to avoid these areas or pull back the throttle when passing. I can fully appreciate the fact that an open system gives you more power but that is only usefull at racetracks or open country roads.
