The SP2 ('02-'06) was made in more plentiful numbers than the SP1 ('00-01).
Also, more aftermarket items were made for the SP2.
I'm a bit partial to the SP2 as that's the variant I own, but both are equally fine bikes.

Welcome. Sounds like a lot of ponies in the stable!
SP2. Better parts availability is the main reason. especially for aftermarket. The SP1 is an awesome bike. But the SP2 was refined even more. Couple things that I know of: Bigger throttle bodies, much improved injectors (atomizes the fuel spray way better), improved exhaust flow, adjusted frame and swingarm to better absorb torsional twist, shaved a few pounds, gained a little HP and TQ. There's probably more but that's some of the differences. Also, 2004 had a Nicky Hayden edition. No apparent increase in value tho over any other comparable RC. And 05 and 06 were offered in black/black.

all these are good points, bottom line is if you want to own an RC for certain reasons and be in this owners club, it doesnt really matter what year it is, it will put a smile on your face anyway. i have the biggest s#@& eatign grin on my face when i ride mine, you will enjoy any year, but they are right sp2 has more aftermarket parts available and a little more twaked then the sp1, i own an sp1 and love it
