It's official...

I'd posted in here a few weeks ago in reference to my search for an RC51. I found one a few hours away and picked it up friday. Its an '05 with only 20k miles on it and seemed to be in good condition. I discovered yesterday that it has layer upon layer of filth. The engine has some sort of material that seems to be charred on the casing. Simple green wouldn't even take it off. I can almost see the chain through the grime as well. Gonna hit that up with some kerosene and a brush. The head tube has surface corrosion inside. It feels kind of rough when you slide your finger inside. Its gotta sweet orange coating in there. Although neglected and subjected to pure laziness, by it's prior owner, it survived. Its a damn shame. Its a beautiful bike. Its the first blk on blk I've seen in person. If anyone has any recommendations on cleaning the block let me know. I'm glad I'm official now...

purple power, or if you take the plastics off and cover all the rubber you can try aircraft coating remover

you can also wire wheel it on a drill or try a dremil

can we get some pics of the neglect as well? might help for ideas

I use DX330. PPG product. Best grease and grime remover I've found. It's a paint-prep cleaner and is entirely safe for any cured painted surface. I've never experienced any issues with contacting rubber like hoses or o-rings. Get it at automotive paint suppliers.

I use a good quality trigger sprayer with a fine mist cause the finer the mist, the further it goes. I always rinse with soapy water just to be sure, but it might not be necessary. I think it's 100% volatile; meaning like rubbing alcohol or mineral spirits, once evaporated leaves 0 residue behind.

Thanks for all of the tips. So far its been simple green and a ton of scrubbing. I got out a blue scotch pad and it helped some. Im going to do the valve check in about 3 weeks so I will take some pics of it all then, once I have everything removed. The pics and the access will be better. The chain is silver again and so is the rear sprocket. It had some serious grime on it. At least it couldn't have rusted like that. Still have a bit of corrosion on the brake caliper hardware. Ill take those off when I do the valves. I also have to bleed the clutch and brakes. Both look rather dark. So far I'm still not disappointed. Its not the RCs fault it wasn't properly cared for. Gonna do the oil and filter tomorrow. Looks like straight crude in the sight glass. The Hotbodies undertail kit and wiring are both a complete mess. That will be tuesday. I think I may search for a better rear fairing assembly. That thing is really rough. Does anyone make a good solo rear? I don't do two-up riding. I only have one pic right now I'm afraid. Didnt take any before I started. Just put my head down and got to work...
