New to the forum (not to 51's:)

Hello all,

As the title states, this is not my first 04 RC-51 (I sold my last one to my best friend with the agreement that I get to buy it back when he sells it, long story short, I missed the bike as soon as it was gone - asked him if he wanted to sell it back and he politely told me "we're boys and I'd do anything for you, but I'm never selling this bike". . .given how I feel about these bikes, how could I blame him). Needless to say - the hunt was on, and I found this one and didn't hesitate as it had everything I wanted (and what I put on my old bike).

Had it for a month now and I'M SOOOOO HAPPY to have her back!!!!!!

Mods that came with the bike (had 2600 miles):

Scotts Steering Dampner
Braided lines
CF hugger
Undertail
Sato Bonzai's
Sato Rearsets
Ohlins shock
CRG levers
Double Bubble
Upgraded Switch gear
HID headlights
Flapper mod with cover
Flush mounted Turn signals (with the eyebrow lights wired for front turn signals)
Speedo healer
15/41 with 520 chain conversion

and all the stock parts that were replaced

Mods (not really) that I added:

Had custom decals made to match the brands I use and added another sticker.

Welcome. I too like you had a moment of insanity and sold my first 2003 RC51 (The gold outlined wings make them the fastest year...) Just last October I have regained sanity.

It is a tough lesson to learn and I don't recommend it either.

You found a show stopper...ride safe.


mmm.....white or gold magnesium forged wheels would look right nice too.

Thanks guys for the welcome! Set the sag up the day after she arrived and have been riding ever since...they really are just magical bikes.

Wheels will be here eventually (unfortunately, nothing I have is OEM and the wife is acutely aware of the correlation of "new toy" and packages suddenly arriving on the doorstep so they'll have to be sneaked in at a later date-she now pays attention to see if anything has "changed" on the car or bikes

Amazing how a woman will pay $100 for a pair of ugly shoes, but gives you that "look" when a bike part arrives.

I work on the principle of "don't ask, don't tell" as long as the bills get paid.

Welcome. Thats a nice story. Looks like you managed to find a really nice bike there - well done. Maybe your best friend's happier now that both of you have RC51's!

Since you'll never sell it, use the chance to modify the hell out of it over time, since parts are never going to get easier or cheaper to get new. You could always have packages sent to a friend nearby

Forget the shoes - I still can't figure out how a hair cut can get close to 400.00 (and even then, you can flip a coin as to whether they actually LIKE IT OR NOT). In all fairness to the wifey, she's the one that actually paid for the bike (we had an agreement when we got engaged - she gets what ever ring she wants, but she has to buy me a motorcycle - the way I figured - how come only the man has to literally PAY to prove how how much he loves his future spouse-it should truly work both ways in a partnership.

The only thing that scares me about the wheels is that turn in may be too quick. I like the fact that the weight of the bike adds to its stability and that because you have to be a little more deliberate with turns, you have have to be deliberate in how you set up for the turns. On my last RC, I experimented with putting a 180 rear on to see how that would effect handling and HOLY SH!T did it's character change. Much more twitchy and WAY more responsive to inputs - I didn't like it because it went to other end for me - didn't have to worry about deliberately setting up anymore but had to pay attention in case corrections had to be made (which I was always doing). I went back to the 190. I'll probably end up getting the wheels - throwing a 190 on and hopefully that will be a happy medium. I know its not the same, but when I put lighter wheels on my car that I use for drag racing, braking, turn in and suspension action was greatly improved but I was spinning everywhere when I tried to launch or even on the street at anything under 40mph. I'm a big fan of MORE POWAH but it's pointless if you can't put it to the ground and when it's being transmitted to one wheel. . . I'm wondering if anyone had gone forged on the front and powdercoated the stock rear to match????

Nice pre-nup idea... wish I'd thought up the same. One tip to anybody considering getting engaged though.... NEVER go together to choose the diamond!

I run forged (PVM) wheels and 190/55R17 on the rear, albeit with a Moriwaki link & Maxton reworked forks and 4 way adjustable shock. The rear's higher than standard (& the front a little lower) to the point I had to extend the side stand by a little over an inch. Some might expect the bike to become less stable as a result. It's not. Much more responsive than standard, but all positively so. It never shakes it's head under hard acceleration and doesn't feel at all nervous. It's become a much more fun & confidence inspiring bike to ride than standard.

So in answer to your question: I think a 190/55R17 rear and forged wheels work very well and would be further enhanced further by more aggressive geometry and suspension changes...
