Hello from South Africa

Hi guys,

My name is Mike and I live in Johannesburg, South Africa. I have a few bikes and currently have 2 Hondas, a '97 CBR1100XX and a '79 CBX1000. Kinda weird because I never was a honda fan.

Honda always seemed, to me anyway, to make fantastically engineered bikes but they lacked something. Except for the 2 I have and the RC51.

I've been lusting for a track bike for a long while and recently looked at a SP1. I will stop short of calling it a basket case but it needs a lot of work. Both forks have serious leaks, the fairings have some poor repair work, mirrors missing, some repair work to the clutch cover, the list goes on. On the plus side, the price is good (equivalent of less than 2000USD), the bike starts and runs well, sounds awesome.

I made a list of things I would need to get done to be able to ride it on track. Nothing competitive, just fun. Cost looked good. Problem is that the wife may not agree to another flipping bike!

So, please guys, talk me out of this

Anyway, happy to be a part of this forum and hope to learn more about this icon.

Cheers,
Mike

Welcome aboard! Glad to have you.
We have at least 2 other members form South Africa here, maybe they'll chime in.
If it has a clean title, and you can do the work, I'd go for it. My bike was a similar situation about 4 years ago, I fixed it, been riding the snott out of it the last 3 years. 22,000 miles later it's still going strong!

It is. Saw the bike in the for sale section and the price is a steal. At that price, just keep it . I got to the point where I hate selling a bike, too much attachment I guess.

Yeah Jon, a clean title. I see he dropped his price a bit so may give him a shout. Just gotta figure how I can slip it into the garage without the wife seeing, lol. By the time she sees it getting worked on it will be too late.

Cobra, will post a few pics. Any rules against post whoring to get to 10?

Some pics of the blackbird, CBX (had a bit more work since then, Triumph Explorer. There's also a Suzuki DRZ400 dirt bike, a SR500 cafe racer project, a 1929 Velocette 2 stroke that's in bits (found on a farm with a solid engine, trying to free it still) and my son's KX65. I have a 1973 MGB GT that I've owned for around 16 years now. Strange I have no pics on the iPad, will post one tomorrow from the PC.

Ok, seems I can only post one pic at a time for now.

The bird.

CBX1000.

A truly impressive machine. Released in 1978, this thing was a sensation. 6 cylinders, 6 carbs, 24 valves, lots of other technical firsts for the time, and fastest production bike. Doesn't handle or stop but great fun to ride within its limits. Fantastic sound from those twin pipes. When the revs rise above 5000.... Wow!

Those carbs are a pain to get right though. It was a right mess when I picked it up.

The triumph. I ride this bike pretty much every day to the office. It can do mild off road excursions (dirt roads, of which we have many) so great bike for touring.

Yup. Blackbird is just yummy. CBX is practically a cult bike now, very desireable. Welcome, and remember, forgiveness is better than permission... go for it!!!

Duct tape can't fix stupid...but it sure helps muffle the sound
