I didn't choose the RC life, the RC life chose me

Hey everybody! I just became the proud owner of a 2000 RC51 after I drove my buddy's off a cliff.

I locked up the rear tire and shot off the edge at about 15 mph. I went down first and the bike second, we danced for about 350 ft before I could dig my feet in and slow down. I spent all day in the ER, no broken bones, hardly any scratches. Just half a stick lodged in my ass LOL

We got the bike back up the ledge by throwing a 70's Cadillac hood down and winching the bike back up on top of it. The whole frame is straight, forks (pending) seem to be ok, calipers and disks are fine, and the ground took more punishment than the engine did.

The fairings are beat to crud, so I'm making the world's most hideous street fighter as of now. If anyone has experience with this awful transformation, I can use all the tips and caveats I can get I'm also in the market for a few odds-n-ends, as not everything made it back up in one piece, my clutch cover included!

Anyways, it's great to be here and I look forward to meeting you all!

-Drew

Sorry to hear about the wreck. Give us some pictures on the project as it comes along.

I once traded my '96 CBR900RR for a buddies GSXR1000 for a morning lap of US129 (back before it was "The Dragon", probably about '97 or '98). Nothing to spirited but I came around one corner and dove inside crossing the double yellows for a little bit. The next corner was coming up and I started my line to drift back across the double yellow mid turn. Once the GSXR front tire hit the line (which I was crossing by intent expecting maybe a brief slide and re-bite; as I did with the CBR freqently) it skipped and the front end went SLAM on the ground and used the pavement to rubbed me off the ride.

As I slid along watching the GSXR--traveling much faster with more momentum (from 4x my mass) and less friction (plastics vs. leather and jeans)--I was thinking "Huh, my CBR doesn't do that."

The GSXR exited doing an honest 30 mph and wrestled a bunch of rocks. I ended up buying a few years old GSXR for great condition market value and trailered home a wreck that my brother ended up buying for about 1/3 the money I spent.

It was a good lesson: Don't expect all bikes to behave the way your bike behaves. Some lessons are more expensive than others.

Later,
Kent Larson

Welcome aboard.

Sucks about the crash; glad you are OK and it sounds like the bike can be saved. That was a pretty creative bike recovery method using the hood of that old caddy - we gotta see pics of that (hopefully you have some) !

You won't see too many streetfighter conversions around these parts (unless they were due to similar circumstances) but you're welcome to try using the search feature (try keywords such as "street," "fighter," or "streetfighter" to populate several thread results and sift through 'em).

I did bookmark a thread from awhile back on the other RC board, maybe this will help:

My Streetfighter Conversion - Speedzilla Motorcycle Message Forums

G'luck & keep us updated on the progress.

Welcome and hate it that you had to get it that way but it appears you will have a great bike once you get it back together.

Thanks for the welcome everyone

Glad to hear you're alright too Kent, it was quite a lesson learned indeed! Step 1: Wear your leathers lol I'll get some photos posted as soon as I get to 10 posts!

Also, thanks for the link cobra, I have a ton of research ahead of me that's for sure. There's such a wide base of knowledge here, so I don't believe it will be any issue.

Here are the wreck photos. Sorry it took so long to post! I've already got her stripped down. Should I make a thread for this project?
