MBD finally got me

I'm a long time VFR owner (85, 02,10). In late June I finally bought an RC51 and for the first time there are two bikes in my garage! It turns out that they make a perfect pair, although the VFR feels like a Gold Wing after getting off the RC.

2003 SP2, only 15,336 miles when purchased, completely stock except for new brake and clutch levers (CRG), a result of a kickstand tip-over I was told. I'm the third owner, apparently it was bought new at the WSBK round at Laguna Seca.

I want to thank Extrapolator, whose thread I found immediately, for all his useful info on sourcing parts and mods. And I've been in touch with Kyle Racing and just received their 15/41 sprocket/chain set. Tires are kind of mis-matched, Diablo Corsa front and Angel GT rear, but I'm too cheap to switch them out until they get closer to the wear bars. Suggestions?

And where should I go from here? If you would point me to the appropriate threads it would be appreciated.

BTW, what a motor!

send your front forks to kyle foe an ohlins 20mm valving upgrade then an ohlins rear suspension from him
after that its up to you
ss brake and clutch lines
sinter brake pads
better rear tire same as the corsa front in my opinion
change exhaust cans

in that order

Welcome aboard.

How worn are the tires on it now, roughly speaking?

Probably won't affect daily riding/street duty that much, but mis-matched rubber *could* pose some issues if you are pushing things - might not be a bad idea to splurge a little on a set of properly matched tires.

I went with a new set of Dunlop Q3s at the beginning of this riding season and love 'em so far (YMMV, of course).

Remember that many of the tire manufacturers often have rebates on sets of new rubber too so keep your eyes peeled if your budget is tight and you can save a few bucks that way as well...g'luck !

Welcome! If you want a list of mods to do, go here.

Mod Instructions Page

Suspension can get pricy, but it's the best investment you can do, imo. Re-valved forks and an Ohlins rear shock takes these bikes to the next level of performance and confidence.

Quick update:

Installed the 15/41 gearing, and I'm very glad I did. My first reaction was "What a difference!" And my 2nd reaction was "It's still geared really high!" Thanks to all for the recommendation.

Replaced the fork seals and bushings, changed out clutch and brake fluid, oil & filter. Most important, I added HRC stickers both sides, noticed an immediate increase of at least 5hp.

I've only put about 1200 miles on it since purchase, NorCal rains have slowed me down a bit. Looking at Michelin 2CT's front and rear. I have never done a track day but am planning for at least one this year, can't wait!

Cannot go wrong with Pilot Power 2CT's. Extremely underrated tire for all conditions both street & track and without a doubt the best value on the market. That front tire is an excellent teaching tool as well, very forgiving with lots of feedback.

Congrats on your purchase and being bitten by the mod bug

Thanks LDH, the next set will definitely be the 2CT's.

Dutchy, I have seen many, many pics of that bike over on VFRD (may she rest in parted-out peace).

A warning to RC51 Forum members: Dutchy will soon suck you in with 20 page threads!
