wierd battery issues

So i searched for a bit on here and couldnt really find anything.

Here is the problem. I put my trickle charger on the bike and leave it over night. i walk out next morning and the light is flashing which indicates bad battery. i unplug it and test it. it has good power. plug it back in and the charger reads good and charged. i pull the charger off. the bike starts fine. ride it about 10 miles total. noting whether lights pulse when i use my signals or not. i get to a gas station and turn her off. when i tried to start it again its dead. jumped it off and rode it home. When i got home i checked all the connections to make sure they were tight and put her back on the charger. when i got up got on it this morning she fired right up. i drove less than a mile. turned her off and she was dead when i tried to start it again.

all the clues tell me bad battery and i was planning on buying one anyway but i wanted some other thoughts about this just in case im missing something.

Sounds exactly like the issue I had couple weeks ago. Bought a new battery and haven't had a problem in 3 weeks.

Ya, but just so you know, Alien Motion recommends 12 cell.

You know about testing the output of your stator and reg/rec right?
From what you describe, I would test that first before spending money on a battery.
But it doesn't sound good for the battery. How old is it?

If the battery had enough power to start the bike, and it goes dead while you are riding it, you had better check your charging system before you point fingers at the battery. Your battery may be at the end of it's life, but your charging system is weak or failing too.

ETA: Damn you JD, beat me to the button.

I'll have to look at the reg/rec and stator. The battery looks old. I've only owned the bike for a few months and it has been in a rebuilding phase most if that time.

Remove the negative terminal completely.

Connect the charger on the terminals

Let it be fully charged until the charger shut off/switch to maintenance mode

Remove the charger and measure the Volts....should be 13.3-13.5V

Let the battery as it is (one terminal disconnected) for as long as you can but at least 5-6 hours. A whole day would be better.

Measure the Volts on it's terminals again. If you measure less than 12.8 you need a new battery. If you read 12.8V or more, you have Amper (current) leak in your system even with the key switch off.....
