chain replacement question

Hi all, newbie here, just pick up an 02 RC51 two weeks ago, mostly stock and can't help it but to start tinkering already.

The current chain seems fine but it's tight and the adjustment blocks are at the end of the swingarms, so I'll put a new chain and sprockets set on over the winter just in case. I'll do stock size 16/40 and 530/104.

My first question could be stupid and obvious. I counted the current chain and there are 53 plates. Does that mean it has 106 links? If I move the adjustment blocks back to the front, I think a 104 may fit? I did not count the teeth of the current sprockets. Someone here mentioned that a 104 may not fit.

The reason for the 104 is I found a DID 530 ZVMX chain and sprockets set which has 104 links and specified that it fits the RC51. Is the ZVMX an overkill? or the VX model will do just fine?

Lastly, when I press on the plate for the master rivet link, how far do I press in the plate before it becomes too tight? I notice these grooves on the chain tool pressing plates with different depth, should I rely on them?

thanks
Joe

SP2 2002-2006 chain is 106 link... if your upgrading the chain you can get away with a 520 kit and be just as good as the 530.Also be cheaper too, try our site sponsors for a quote.

sorry to be redundant, just confirming that 104 is definitely not long enough for a 2002? Found a great deal on a DID ZVM but with only 104 links,

I wanted to stay with 530 as 525/520 may need speedo healer?

Anyone know an affiliated good vendor I can get a kit from?

thanks
Joe

The OEM ratio of 16F/40R was over-geared.
The more popular rations are 15F/41R or 42R.
This allows better acceleration from a stop with little impact on top speed.

You won't need a speedohealer when you change the chain pitch, only when you are changing the Gear ratio on the sprockets. Best deals try STG they are our site sponsor or other sponsors here too. Yes you need a 106 link for the SP2....

Was typing while thinking of the next sentence and ran the two together.
OEM is indeed 16/40.

thanks for all your feedback so far, despite being more than 10 yrs old, the RC can still easily out run my competence, so I'll just keep everything stock and be sure to get myself a 106 links, I'll try STG as suggested.

thanks again
Joe

Sub's suggestion will make the bike easier to use in traffic, etc. as the gearing is too tall as standard and you'll be needing to slip the clutch more. It's gearing to pass emissions, noise, etc. not for ease of use.

Also, you should never fit a new chain on old sprockets, that's a false economy. Your chain won't last nearly as long if you do this. To replace as a complete set is better. That's why it's also better to get a 15/41-42 whilst you're at it.

Riders Discount is a vendor here and can supply, also they sell Motion Pro chain riveter kits if needed.
