Buying an import

Hi guys, A typical newb question here. I've owned a whole bunch of bikes and I currently own a CRF 250M and a Ducati Diavel but I'm looking at adding an SP2 to my stable.

The bike is an import from Japan into Thailand here where I live now. It looks to be bog stock apart from some yoshi pipes and a tinted screen. It has about 28,000km on the clock. Its only about 150,000B which is $5000 aussie dollars.

So my questions are.

With this many ks on the clock what are some of the main things to look for and is there anything specific to a JDM import that I should know about? I know there are some things that are specific only in Japan. Like speed an power limits. Are there any on the SP2?

I've been surfing through the forum and there aren't really that many consistent issues that I have seen. Most of them are electrical from what I've seen.

Cheers
Steve

I had a CRM250M about 15 years ago. Fun bikes to wheelie in town.

SP2's carry changes that fixed some of the minor problems of SP1's, such as fuel tanks that could crack on the lower mounting, discs are 1mm thicker at the front to avoid warping, etc. so no, at 28,000km there's not much that is likely to be wrong mechanically.

There have been numerous threads on what to look for when buying one of these bikes, so it's best to do a search first. I don't think I'd see a Japanese spec. RC51, but that doesn't mean there wasn't one. Mine here in Japan is a European spec bike which is actually an SC45, not RC51 but same bike in every other aspect except cosmetics.

In Thailand I'd be looking very closely for signs of prior theft. Check the shear bolts on the underside of the steering lock to make sure they haven't been removed. You should have only one key for the steering lock & seat cover but if there is one, that doesn't mean it's safe. A lot of stolen bikes in Japan end up in Thailand & SE Asia.

Euro RC51 SP2: HRC WSB Ti Hi-Level, T1 Airbox & Snorkel, PCIII, Dymag CA5 Carbon Wheels, Ti64 Spindles (F, R & Swing Arm), Mori Link, Maxton GP7 Shock & Ohlins 832 Forks, Brembo GP Calipers & SBK narrow track (F), Braketech Disc (R), Brembo billet Underslung x 2 Brembo RCS, Tyga Triple, 7075 Stem, Probolt Titanium all over, Babyface rearsets, MR Complete Carbon Lineup, Custom Undertail & CBR 1000 LED, Watsen LED Indicators, Harris Brace, Giles clip-ons, Corbin seat, etc. 2013 BOTY.

Yeah. It wouldn't surprise me if this was stolen and sent here. Even if the bike had local registration it doesn't mean that its not stolen. Money talks here.

There are still plenty of checks that can be done to find out. Unfortunately it usually falls on deaf ears, even if you have the proof.
