Fuel tank issues/remove sealant

So my fuel tank had a small leak by the rear bracket. It's an sp1. I removed the gas tank tonight to take it tomorrow to get welded. Upon removal I noticed its already been welded once before and they put a horrible sealant inside the tank! I was noticing hesitation while riding so I thought it could be the fuel filter.... Well, I removed the fuel pump assembly and found steel wool stuck near the filter in the rubber carrier. Wtf. Back to the sealant inside the tank. So when I inspected the inside of the tank from the bottom, the sealant is bubbled up and starting to separate. Again wtf. Some people expect these quick "fixes" to work? So my questions are; should I just buy a new tank? Should I try and fix mine? If so how can I remove the sealant? Is this even possible? I'm gonna take it to a shop tomorrow and see what they say. I need it cleaned out and welded at the rear bracket. Any info will help. Thanks guys!

Same exact scenario. Was the crap in your tank white?

I used acetone to losen it up and removed it all the red kote sealer in he tank. Jb weld on the outside.

The sealant in the tank was grey. Looked like the previous owner tried to seal from the inside out. I ended up taking it to get welded. The welder cut out the bracket from the brass and welded a new piece of metal in place of the brass. $100 bucks. Definitely worth it. No leaks!! Done right. I don't have to worry about leaking from that bracket ever again!! Thanks for all the thoughts on the proper fixes.
