Why install the FAN mod??

Ive bought a used 2005 rc51 with a fan mod. Im trying to understand why install a fan mod? Shouldn't the fan come on all by itself???

What do you mean by fan mod? Was the radiator moved to the front of the bike, or are you talking about new fans installed, or a switch installed so you turn the fans on yourself?

Perhaps the sensor died, and the previous owner just tied it in to a switch hot circuit?

The coolant temp switch died on my ZRX. So I just wired in a manual toggle on off switch. When it's hot, I turn it on. And leave it on.

I thought there was an ECU option on the SP2 that set the fans to go on all the time. Is that it.

I should have been more specific. Bought the bike used about 3 weeks ago. I didnt know anything about rc51's. The previous owner simply said, "this switch turns the fans on whenver your like". I asked.. shouldnt they come on automatically? He said "yes", but with this switch.. they will come on soooner.. and stay on.

Ofcourse, later i realized.. the fans did not come on automatically. So after dropping if off at a shop.. the reason it had a "FAN MOD".. is because the thermostat was bad, the temperature sensor was bad.. and keeping the fans on all the time, BARELY kept it from overheating. The first day I rode it.. it shot right up to 245-250?!?! Pulled over several times.. justy to get them temp down.. and get back home.

Now after everythings been replaced. fans cycle on at 220, temp drops down to 210, all well!

So in my case.. the fan mod was due to something being broken.. and the mod, was really a BAND AID.

There is three fan mods.
One is to reverse the rotation of the stock fans. This pushes air from the inside out vs pulling air in from the outside against the natural flow while moving. If both fans are reversed it will not keep the bike in a safe temperature range.

Two, install a STSP switch to ground the fan relay. This allows you to turn on and off the fans at will. Useful for when you know that you're going to be sitting in traffic for a while.

Three, replace the OEM fans with aftermarket SPAL pusher fans. They move more air and made to push air with the natural air flow while moving.

I have done all three and if you make the switch to SPAL fans you really don't need the manual switch. But I like having it.

Do not reverse both fans! It will overheat if you're not moving.

You forgot Mod 4 removing both fans for greater air flow while moving because you aren't a street riding wanker sitting in bumper to bumper traffic on an overheating race replica bike

Mod #5. The temperature sensor is BROKEN.. but i want to sell the BIKE. Put a switch on it.. and call it an "UPGRADE".
