Red kote

So I repaired my leaky tank with jb weld. Then the voice of a thousand Internet warnings reverberated in my mind. So I read up on Red kote, and proceeded forward.

Looks like the previous owner had similar thoughts, but over all poorly executed. The previous jb weld didn't work. He failed to prep the area, and the jb weld just pulled right up with little effort. Once inside, there was a similar poorly applied tank liner. I pulled out most of these coating in sheets. The rest dissolved with acetone. This product was white.

So now it looks like I am ready for the next stage. I've read all the instructions for red kote. Seems straightforward. But.....how do you get the excess out?

Maybe seal it all up with tape, slosh around per the directions and then try to drain out via the vent hole in the filler?

How did you do it?

Yep. That's what I did. I put a Baggie over it, and tried to seal it up. Didn't work very well.

I will put a second application on tomorow. Should be good.

Decided against a second red kote application. I let the first coat air dry for 4 days. Seems good. Re installed it all yesterday and poured a gallon of fuel in.

No leaking. Seems to have worked.

Did a half day ride about, and no leaky tank. Ops tests good. So a thumbs up to the Red Kote method. JB weld on the outside is extra effort, perhaps not needed. I think properly prepped sheet metal and JB weld would probably work. It is pretty amazing stuff.

For anyone else contemplating this repair, I would make one change if I had to do it all over again. I would drill a small hole in the tank, in the rear underside. Then braze or JB weld a reduced height nut over the hole. This hole would be used to drain out the excess Red Kote. Then I would put an internal wrenching bolt with some sealer on the threads when all done. Might also fabricate a small aluminum cover for the fuel pump hole. The cap hole was easily taped up. The larger pump hole was difficult to deal with.
