Low fuel indicator issues

Hey guys,
Bike is running like a champ but as winter approaches it is time for me to start thinking about upgrades. However, first thing first. My bike never knows how much fuel is in the tank. I can fill up and drive away with the low light on, or I can be empty (like I was the other day) and the light not be on at all. Has this happened to any of you? Is it a common problem? Does anyone have a diagram that shows the level indicator and sending unit?

Thanks,
Canty

Found an old post with some great pictures. I will pull it out soon and check the wires to make sure they are in good shape. Has the level sender became a part that we can replace? The post on here says that it is not (at the time of the post) and that the manual and SubSailor says that it must be replaced with the entire fuel pump assembly unit.

The low fuel light on my SP1 comes on a bit erratically based on how much fuel I then add. It has never failed to come on, but I don't trust it so I go with light or trip meter at 100 miles, whichever comes first. Cheers
