Locking scissor gears?

On Sunday we succesfully fitted the EVO Shift kit on a SP2, but one thing puzzled us....


Prior to taking the outer clutch basket off, the manual states to locks the gears. This by putting in a small rod throgh the holes


But how does one get the holes to "line up"??

In the end we put a mark on the gears and upon refitting the outer basket rotating it it as to "push" the lower gear to line up again.



We took a couple of hours to take it easy, think through what we were doing and double checking everything.

One thing "lost in translation" from FactoryPro's instruction is "Keep the clutch tranmission shaft from turning and slowly turn the rear wheel. Shift through the gears to verufy"
Well......... you CANNOT keep it from tunting once in gear!" What you CAN DO (and we figured this is what they mean) is gripping it (with a gloves) and create resistance. W/O this, shifting would be shyte, with resistance it worken beaufifully.

Buttoned everything up, fresh fluids amd indeed the shift action is much improved. Robert commutes on his' so we did his bike first. Mike will be done over the winter.

No problems finding neutral at a stop? Mine was impossible so I took it out.

yeah neutral is a total asshole with these kits. you have to take a very quick swipe at it instead of steady pressure.

i really don't see enough appreciable difference in the shape of the stars to justify the kit. i think just the heavy spring and roller bearing detent would get you 99% of the way anyway.

I guess I will find out later.... But finding neutral now (in OEM trim) is already so crap, I reckon it can only get better (famous last words..)
When I speak my pal next, will ask him if he experiences the neutral issue


But there was a question in my initial post... :-)

you line up the holes by indexing the engine. pull the plug off the stator cover and turn the engine by hand until they line up.

you don't need to do this for this job specifically. the basket isn't timed to the crank.

Hi Wibbly,

The clutch basket is not, but we reckoned the 3 gears in the picture are. As we removed the basket, "lower" one skipped one tooth to the left. (as you can see by he marks we made).

Turning the engine by hand; I *guess* -but will find out- that compression needs to be overcome, so pulling the plugs. Never been this deep inside an engine, so learning here not to do stoopid stuff :-)


As for the "neutral", my pal noticed no differnet in this. He did find the shift action lighter, faster and more "positive"...
I will let you know what I experience once done.






we also fitted a new clutch cover; a tip-over caused a small, but leaking, hairline crack...

Dutchy , the holes in the primary split gear were lined up by the clutch basket's teeth until the clutch basket was removed. The split gears , here and in the cam drive , quiet the straight cut gears rather than using side loading , power robbing helical cut gears. Obviously you figured it out.
