Front cylinder valve cover

Alright, what's the trick to getting this valve cover with a new gasket back on the engine without getting still wet gasket-maker everywhere? It's hard enough to keep the gasket on the cover without it falling off before even trying to line it up.

I've got the air deflector thingy removed and pushed as many hoses out of the way as possible - am I just mechanically challenged??

Don't forget to cover the exposed components with a clean shop rag until replacing the valve cover.
Gotta keep the nastys out.
